It honestly has been. One of the worst tournaments I've seen in awhile. And Canada still has the possible chance of winning gold. The talent seems down all around and the venue should be in another Canadian market other then Montreal/Toronto for 2 in 3 years. Just a cluster of things not going well.
Well, there's no Laine/Puuljarvi/Matthews this year around. Patrick could've been such a player, but he's injured.
I have considered attending this event on several previous occasions in North America and the tickets are just too expensive and difficult to acquire. I always watch it on TV or on the web.
The World Juniors has become too corporate. Just another event for rich people. And with the recent decision to host most of the tournaments in North America, it is only getting worse.
If you're equating tournaments in NA with price gouging, I agree.
If you're equating tournaments in NA with not attending/boring factor, it makes no sense whatsoever.
WJC was only interesting when the Canadian teams had a stake in the tournament - either their top prospects were playing or they had a shot at drafting the top talent that year.
No one is really in that boat this year. I didn't go to a single game and haven't watched a full one either. Thought about going to USA/Swiss today but wasn't worth the $20 USD ha.
Chabot is playing as a 19 YO.
Sergachev is playing as a 18 YO.
And Vancouver won't pick particularily high. Winnipeg might not either. And
Hype is one things, but the games haven't been great either. The NYE game was anything but a classic, the quarters haven't been exciting except for SUI/USA being tied for like 30 seconds in the third...

By the same token, obviously, the most important games are to come so it feels silly to judge it too harshly right now.
Czech Rep. vs. Canada was surprisingly entertaining to Watch. Am I the only one who thought so?
NHLs fault. They vaccuming european and NA prospects and put them in NHL early. With players i NHL that could play WJC. Like Laine for example.
NHL is only taking care of NHL and that even though they get prospects almost for free developed in sweden and Russia and more. The dream of NHL is to blame. If tou bojcott NHL they have to change but untill that happens WC WJC Worlds will be worst
First, why would Winnipeg not sign Laine? I mean, he clearly makes the Jets better. The same can be said for the Leafs with Matthews.
Second, NHL teams tend to care about themselves. They aren't subsidized state "corporations", like the national federations. The Jets fanbase is entitled to enjoy Patrik Laine, and the Leafs fanbase is also entitled to enjoy Auston Matthews.
nhl teams would ease on the contract signing until theyre 20 or sumting
What you're suggesting has a name : Collusion.
this tournament has really been a dud for me...there was a time when I wouldn't miss a minute of Team Canada junior action.
and it's getting worse every year...
NHL GMs hording junior talent when they could still benefit from a developmental tournament...
Hockey Canada/TSN's gross corporate commercialization of the event plus Hockey Canada's incompetence is really sapping whatever interest I have left in this tournament.
I missed last evening's 1/4 game...I had planned on watching, but something better came up last minute.
I imagine I'll get around to checking the highlights sometime today.
A few things.
First things first : You're right on the gross corporate commercialization and HC incompetence (prices...)
Also, it seems Canada toned down a bit on physicality over the years. I'm not suggesting Stefan Della Rovere is missing, but in some cases, it might bring a slightly more "boring" game.

A few problems. Price gauging by Hockey Canada and the IIHF. Same market as 2 years ago. And Montreal is a Habs town, not a hockey town. 10500 in attendance for a Canada quarter final game? That is just sad, but totally expected (look at the attendance from 2 years ago). Hockey Canada overestimated the market, big time. Also, hosting the tournament in Canada every 2 years it too much - but that was a money decision by IIHF.
I think someone touched on it a few posts back, but if the NHL moves to a 19 yr old draft, that would help this tournament immensely as most (if not all) the young talent would be playing in it.
For me, I watch no matter what. I love hockey and getting to cheer on my country is always a treat. Not overly impressed with our team, but that's how it goes. And that certainly doesn't make me want to watch less - I am less excited but no less passionate about this tournament.
You're partly right on Montreal, but the overrating comes down to pricing.
I mean, 80$ is reasonable... for most expensive tickets. When the cheaper tickets are 80$, then I'm afraid we're on the other side of unreasonable.
Look... I love the WJC and Junior Hockey in general. I'm 2 hours away (drive) from Montreal, and I can easily stay overnight in Montreal area if I desire to do so, no need for an hotel or anything. I also have... let's say, a decent amount of disposable income.
We're talking about 200$ to attend a game (all in all), and that's with upper bowl tickets. That's also only for myself. Remember the point about disposable income? I don't think one gets the disposable income I enjoy by making irrationnal choices unless you're a plastic surgeon or a crazily successful entrepreneur (which I'm not).
So, minimum 200$ for one game (...and no way I attend only one game if I'm to spend the day in Montreal, so let's chalk that up to 275$, since I think the non-Canada games are cheaper). 275$ vs. watching the game at home, completely free.
The choice is easy.
