That is a lot of eligible talent among others that is missing.

Forgot the biggest star of all McDavid

this tournament has really been a dud for me...there was a time when I wouldn't miss a minute of Team Canada junior action.

and it's getting worse every year...

NHL GMs hording junior talent when they could still benefit from a developmental tournament...

Hockey Canada/TSN's gross corporate commercialization of the event plus Hockey Canada's incompetence is really sapping whatever interest I have left in this tournament.

I missed last evening's 1/4 game...I had planned on watching, but something better came up last minute.

I imagine I'll get around to checking the highlights sometime today.

Okay there, Debbie Downer.

It's fair to say that this particular edition of the WJC isn't all that it could have been, but I've watched every game (Except the relegation game that wasn't televised here), and it has still been a damn exciting event. I think a lot of people just need to check their attitudes and enjoy watching hockey in its purest form.

Well... when the highlight of the tournament is Team Finland's hilariously bad performance - on and off the ice - that tells something
That most certainly isn't the highlight of the tournament. It is interesting and unexpected though.

If you're looking for the REAL highlight of the tournament, I suggest you re-watch the Denmark wins... and the celebration that followed.

You guys are over reacting - we've just been spoiled over the last few tournaments with the likes of McDavid, Matthews, Eichel, and the Laine/Puljujarvi/Aho line. Those types of players and lines come around only so often. Nolan Patrick wouldn't have helped.

I think we're going to look back at these last 2 drafts like we do now on 2003-2005, so much high end talent.

I mean, it's not been the best tournament, but there's been plenty of great hockey and story Iines. Team Denmark finishing 2nd in their pool ahead of Finland. Switzerland's come back against the Danes to avoid going back to the relegation round. The Czechs and Swiss battled the two North American teams to tight quarter final games. And we still have the most important games left.

Canada and Russia aren't as strong as we've seen in the past, but the tournament is pretty well balanced this year. Latvia was really the only weak team. Sweden and USA have pretty strong rosters to boot, with future stars in Nylander and Keller leading the way.

I think the semi finals and medal round have the potential to be very special, just like every year.

You are right, and I wasn't being 100% serious, but yes I personally always enjoy "the underdogs" doing well, And love seeing new teams starting to find their place among real contenders.
It was more of an outburst from Finnish perspective :sarcasm:

so true , we've been spoiled !

It's true, hockey fans are the most fickle of all.

I think this tournament has been great. This is the best opportunity I've had to see Wild prospects such as Greenway, Kunin, Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek in some extended game action.

Even with the absence of some of the great players, I still believe the talent level is incredible and will continue to only get better. No longer are these tournaments simply Canada's to lose.

The last couple of years the Spengler Cup has been more interesting to watch and with better crowds-atmosphere, the World Juniors have become an overpriced overrated joke.

2008 – 3328
2009 – 14622
2010 – 9740
2011 – 10635
2012 – 14688
2013 – 3554
2014 – 4654
2015 – 12212
2016 – 7714
2017 – 8004

It was pretty expensive for any Canada game so there's price gouging, compared to USA games that were only like 35 USD at most instead of like, say, 150 for juniors. The Russia/Slovakia match I went to was just 7 dollars and it was exciting to see young players from places other than NA play. I don't pass on an opportunity to cheer for team USA and watch at least 1 game for each country, I love these tournaments. What we have seen lately though is a high end talent flood... most of these players are now in the NHL producing, but the tourny itself isn't bad at all.

It honestly has been. One of the worst tournaments I've seen in awhile. And Canada still has the possible chance of winning gold. The talent seems down all around and the venue should be in another Canadian market other then Montreal/Toronto for 2 in 3 years. Just a cluster of things not going well.

Well, there's no Laine/Puuljarvi/Matthews this year around. Patrick could've been such a player, but he's injured.

I have considered attending this event on several previous occasions in North America and the tickets are just too expensive and difficult to acquire. I always watch it on TV or on the web.

The World Juniors has become too corporate. Just another event for rich people. And with the recent decision to host most of the tournaments in North America, it is only getting worse.

If you're equating tournaments in NA with price gouging, I agree.
If you're equating tournaments in NA with not attending/boring factor, it makes no sense whatsoever.

WJC was only interesting when the Canadian teams had a stake in the tournament - either their top prospects were playing or they had a shot at drafting the top talent that year.

No one is really in that boat this year. I didn't go to a single game and haven't watched a full one either. Thought about going to USA/Swiss today but wasn't worth the $20 USD ha.

Chabot is playing as a 19 YO.
Sergachev is playing as a 18 YO.

And Vancouver won't pick particularily high. Winnipeg might not either. And

Hype is one things, but the games haven't been great either. The NYE game was anything but a classic, the quarters haven't been exciting except for SUI/USA being tied for like 30 seconds in the third...

(...)

By the same token, obviously, the most important games are to come so it feels silly to judge it too harshly right now.

Czech Rep. vs. Canada was surprisingly entertaining to Watch. Am I the only one who thought so?

NHLs fault. They vaccuming european and NA prospects and put them in NHL early. With players i NHL that could play WJC. Like Laine for example.

NHL is only taking care of NHL and that even though they get prospects almost for free developed in sweden and Russia and more. The dream of NHL is to blame. If tou bojcott NHL they have to change but untill that happens WC WJC Worlds will be worst

First, why would Winnipeg not sign Laine? I mean, he clearly makes the Jets better. The same can be said for the Leafs with Matthews.

Second, NHL teams tend to care about themselves. They aren't subsidized state "corporations", like the national federations. The Jets fanbase is entitled to enjoy Patrik Laine, and the Leafs fanbase is also entitled to enjoy Auston Matthews.

nhl teams would ease on the contract signing until theyre 20 or sumting

What you're suggesting has a name : Collusion.

A few things.

First things first : You're right on the gross corporate commercialization and HC incompetence (prices...)

Also, it seems Canada toned down a bit on physicality over the years. I'm not suggesting Stefan Della Rovere is missing, but in some cases, it might bring a slightly more "boring" game.

[MOD]

A few problems. Price gauging by Hockey Canada and the IIHF. Same market as 2 years ago. And Montreal is a Habs town, not a hockey town. 10500 in attendance for a Canada quarter final game? That is just sad, but totally expected (look at the attendance from 2 years ago). Hockey Canada overestimated the market, big time. Also, hosting the tournament in Canada every 2 years it too much - but that was a money decision by IIHF.

I think someone touched on it a few posts back, but if the NHL moves to a 19 yr old draft, that would help this tournament immensely as most (if not all) the young talent would be playing in it.

For me, I watch no matter what. I love hockey and getting to cheer on my country is always a treat. Not overly impressed with our team, but that's how it goes. And that certainly doesn't make me want to watch less - I am less excited but no less passionate about this tournament.

You're partly right on Montreal, but the overrating comes down to pricing.

I mean, 80$ is reasonable... for most expensive tickets. When the cheaper tickets are 80$, then I'm afraid we're on the other side of unreasonable.

Look... I love the WJC and Junior Hockey in general. I'm 2 hours away (drive) from Montreal, and I can easily stay overnight in Montreal area if I desire to do so, no need for an hotel or anything. I also have... let's say, a decent amount of disposable income.

We're talking about 200$ to attend a game (all in all), and that's with upper bowl tickets. That's also only for myself. Remember the point about disposable income? I don't think one gets the disposable income I enjoy by making irrationnal choices unless you're a plastic surgeon or a crazily successful entrepreneur (which I'm not).

So, minimum 200$ for one game (...and no way I attend only one game if I'm to spend the day in Montreal, so let's chalk that up to 275$, since I think the non-Canada games are cheaper). 275$ vs. watching the game at home, completely free.

The choice is easy.

Is Nolan Patrick even the sure fire first overall pick anymore? I can't remember a January where the first OA is still so up in the air. It's been awhile.

For the U20 Fifa World Cup in Montreal in 2007 with next to no marketing there was crowd of over 40 000 46 000 55 000 in Montreal...

This tournament = 2000 3000 2000...

:sarcasm:Every 4 years would suffice........lack of interest is due to the saturation of hockey in Canada.........Let the Europeans or the US deal with it so we can bash them for a couple of years.......

Would next year even be much better when it comes to superstars?

NTDP 99s are terrible and the 00s aren't exactly showing they'll deserve the early invite.

Dahlin/Svechnikov vs Hischier/Liljegren/Nylander/Kaprizov (first two could be in the show as well as Patrick next year?)

Haven't had the urge to watch a single WJ game this year. Never happened to me before, but I literally have 0 interest this year.

Me too! It's weird because it has been a yearly tradition for me for so many years. I can't explain why this year I all of a sudden can't be bothered to watch.

There will be NHL superstars in the bunch of players present at this tournament you might just not know who it is yet..

It's weird I loved watching all the QF games.

Russia was bailed out by Samsonov a bunch of times.

Sweden gives up 3 straight goals giving some hope only to score a bunch with petterson making some highlight plays.

USA vs SUI was unreal Hischier literally putting the team on his back.

Canada vs the Slovaks where you actually thought there might be a chance for the slovaks if not for the bday boy stepping up.

I love all this parity so fun to watch.

Only wish Finland fired there coaches earlier they deserved a better fate.
