This roster will be stronger than usual but it could have been so much better but no Matthews, likely no Kane and seems like no Jones, Atkinson.

disappointing...

but I still think it's going to be a Canada v U.S. gold medal match up.

well this is disappointing, we went from potentially both Kane and Matthews to neither. I dont blame guys for not going though, they must be exhausted. Hopefully we can get guys like Atkinson/ Saad or Galchenyuk/ Pacioretty with our forward spots and like McAvoy, Jones etc. Maybe even Suter or Zucker. We can still have a really good team.

How many forward spots are left?
And when is the deadline to finalize the roster?

there is no deadline. just a roster limit of 25. 3 goalies 22 skaters. you can add anytime until you hit 25.

3 spots remaining (skaters) until they hit the 25 man roster.

Yes.
Because Wcup we have many declines :)

I'm not sure that's true. The guys declining has been the usual ones and many guys who played in World Cup are competing in this tournament. Those declining may give it as an excuse because they don't want to just straight up say "I don't feel like playing".

Kane, Jones and Atkinson also out? Pretty dissapointing after all. They should ask Gally. Maybe Tkachuk is still option if those guys are out.

Gaudreau-Eichel-Tkachuk*
Nelson-Gally*-Lee
Larkin-Bjugstad-Dvorak
Keller-Copp-Compher
Greenway-Björk

In D McAvoy should be in this team. If Gardiner also decline this time maybe they should ask Carrick.

Hanifin-Trouba
Murphy-McAvoy*
Dekeyser-K.Miller*
Brickley-Carrick*

McAvoy says he wants to play. I'd be surprised if he isn't invited in next day or so

A little hard not to be disappointed when it looked like we might be sending a very formidable roster. It is still better than years past, but you also wonder what the dominoes are for Matthews and Kane looking hard but ultimately deciding no thanks.

Man, what a bummer. Not that anyone should have ever expected the roster we had a chance at putting together, but to lose out on both Kane and Matthews, especially after the former seemed like he was seriously considering it, is a huge letdown. There's still an opportunity to add a few really good players, and this team could still end up as one of our best ever, but it's like deja vu as a USAH fan with this tournament. We can never have nice things.

What's odd is the players that I've seen - Charlie McAvoy, Jake Gardiner, James van Riemsdyk, Matthew Tkachuk, and Alex Galchenyuk (RFA) - are all on the record as not being contacted by USAH at this point. All seem undecided, but it's a bit odd.

What's the deal here?

  1. USAH is shell-shocked because they thought Kane, Matthews, etc. were guarantees and haven't moved on yet?
  2. Some of the previous undecideds/unknowns that seem like reasonable candidates (Seth Jones, Cam Atkinson, Brandon Dubinsky, Brandon Saad, Brett Pesce, Jack Johnson, Jason Zucker, Charlie Coyle, Justin Braun, Ryan Hartman, Nick Schmaltz, etc.) are likely in but not official, so they don't think they have the spots to offer?
  3. They're deciding which college UFAs and European-based players they'd rather pursue?
  4. USAH is incompetent?

It's weird. We don't have to fill up the roster, but we definitely need to add 1 d-man at a minimum. And it's not like there's a ton of likely targets out there that we haven't heard about at this point. I think we can safely assume the reasonable targets are the aforementioned names and guys like Max Pacioretty, Zach Parise, Ryan Suter, Jason Pominville, Joe Pavelski, Paul Martin, Nick Foligno (injured), David Backes, Torey Krug (injured), Brandon Carlo (injured), and Zach Werenski (injured) aren't options. Who or what else could it be?

And I would imagine McAvoy would definitely go, so it's weird that some of these guys haven't heard anything yet. It also seems like an obvious USAH play to invite JVR and TVR in hopes that they can use TVR to entice JVR.

Hopefully we get some finalization soon. We may always look back and say "What if?" but there's still a ton of potential for this team.

Without getting too political here

As someone who lives in Europe and will be in Paris in about 10 days--due to pass crap happening in Paris and other places--I think players are not a motivated as in other years

take a look a Canada's goalies?

I think alot of north americans are saying no

Just to address your point 4, and I understand you are far from alone in this line of thinking, but it is kind of hard to call USAH incompetent given how far we have come as a hockey nation and national program in the last 15 years. We are sitting on U18 women, U18 men, U20 men and US women golds. Absolutely amazing run of success. Go to the Canada boards, there is much talk of how they need to emulate the American program. That is USA Hockey. I go back to the AHAUS days, so I understand how far our programs have come. I will also readily admit, I am a bit biased in that I did a lot of development program work and District level player evaluations in my coaching days.

As it pertains to this specific tournament, I think USAH had issues for years attracting top level players and decided to use it as a platform to give young players international experience. They still do that to some extent, but I also think they are trying to adjust to the newish Canadian model of high level NHL players. I'm going over to watch so I am hoping for as many top guys as we can attract but I am also excited to see guys like Dvorak and Compher.

Go USA. :handclap:

I don't think that's an issue here. I can't speak to the Canadian team, but even with the disappointing news with Kane and Matthews, this is one of the better USA teams so far in recent memory and there's still a chance it ends up being one of our best on paper.

The incompetence comment is mostly in jest. USAH certainly makes a lot of baffling decisions, and I think they usually have a very misguided approach to this tournament. That said, they absolutely deserve a lot of credit for the growth in the American game in the last 15 years, but there's still a long way to go, and often it's USAH as the one standing in the way of further growth.

And yes, rain or shine, I'll be watching the games regardless of their decisions. Go USA!

Sweden's roster is almost Olympic quality, and the USA roster is still way better than we normally bring. Canada is just a bit of an odd case this year, same with Finland. Though I'm sure both will still do well.
