I think adding all the college players so early was short sighted and dumb

Yeah, it's kind of stupid. Or just wait a bit, there are plenty of NHLers that would go. But I know USA uses this tournament almost as development for young players.

I think it is really simple. I don't think that USA Hockey is that stupid that they would not wait for other NHLers to become available. They simply want to add some college players to this group no matter who will be available and who not.

It's probably part of development process for these players, they probably have list of college players which they want to invite to this tournament. This tournament is not among the biggest priorities for US Hockey, we all know that... Obviously, they will want to add also star players if it is possible, because it's always better to gain experience in winning environment, and after all WHC has its undisputed prestige and history, especially in Europe.

Wow. I always love watching this tournament, but we have a legit gold medal caliber team if Kane joins. Adding Gaudreau was huge.

If Kane indeed is in, wow. We definitely still need Seth Jones. After that, it's mostly gravy, and they should wait until the first round of playoffs are finished to consider the last 2 spots. We'd definitely need to add at least 1 more d-man (assuming we already have Jones), but I'd hold the last forward spot to see if Matthews becomes available. If not, taking the best available center seems prudent.

Honestly seems like Kane is in. If not Tkachuk would have already been contacted by now since he's the type of player they target for this tournament. Probably becomes official by Sunday

Ummm, boys this isn't the Olympics, no need to take all your biggest guns...

Sick team, looking forward to watching you guys play! I'm happy for the guys that are here every year and still watch, your dedication is finally being rewarded!

yeah, I don't think it looks great if the star player the very next morning after getting eliminated says he playing in a tournament...wants to space it out a few days so it doesn't look rushed..or that the Blackhawks loss didn't bother him.

multiple sources say he is going, and even the Hawks beat writer said he is going, so maybe this is just for optics as Gaudreau just got listed today not right after they were eliminated.

When did the US send a forward group like this to the worlds last time? The D is pretty good as well. The Goalies are also good. Looks good for the US.

Finally! This is the type of team USA I've been dreaming about! Having Kane on board should lure a top defensemen like Jones! Hopefully the rest of the roster fills out nicely.

2009 was actually a pretty solid roster, and maybe to a lesser extent 2012 (Ryan, Pacioretty and Stastny but not very deep).

I distinctly remember in 2009, although they didn't have real stars like the year before, it was the second straight year they had a pretty credible roster and I thought maybe there was some sort of policy change and it was there to last. Alas...

Patrick Kane to join Team USA for 2017 Worlds, per report

No longer in the NHL playoffs, Kane will represent the red, white, and blue in Europe.

Blackhawks beat writer Chris Kuc is saying the same thing- Kane is coming to the Worlds to play for team USA!! :handclap::handclap:

And Gaudreau. This is awesome. Saad and Jones would complete a great team!

I think the Euro based pros are always underrated by us. It'll depend on what Canada looks like but yeah this year is exciting.

I think it's less the Euro based players are underrated, and more that those players and their federations take this tournament very seriously and they're very comfortable playing the IIHF style. For example, Russia and Sweden are already holding training camps and playing exhibition games, and Team USA players are back home hanging out with friends and family. The European teams take this tournament more seriously than we take the Olympics or World Cup.

We'll obviously never have that type of commitment, and you're right in that we still need to see who else ends up on the other top teams, but we're definitely shaping up to be a gold medal contender if the remaining dominos fall as rumored. Whether the team will deliver when the games matter is another thing, but if Kane and Jones come through (not even counting the other 2 possible roster spots) then if the team fails to deliver it won't be due to a lack of talent as is the case most years.

I remember this tournament. They had great depth up front and a middling defense. Kane was an 18 year old rookie, Kessel was still trying to break out in the NHL, and Parise, Brown, and Pominville were the established stars.

That was the team that just couldn't solve a talented and organized Team Finland. Team USA was fairly disorganized, and Finland was a well oiled machine in the Quarterfinals. That was the same tournament where Backes (at the time establishing himself in the NHL) tuned up Anssi Salmela at the end of the last round robin game.

Can't disagree with this

I'm still little skeptic regarding Patrick Kane. It is not yet confirmed. In my opinion John Shannon is not very reliable source. He said couple of weeks later that Doughty had called to Hockey Canada and had said that he wants to play for Canada at the worlds. We haven't yet heard anything from Doughty concerning to worlds.

Yeah, I don't think Kane's locked in yet. The news about Kane's possible acceptance came out hours before the news that Gaudreau was going to play, and yet USAH only released the news on Gaudreau.

I believe Custance more than Shannon here. It seems likely that Kane is going to play, but if he had given the go ahead, USAH would have announced it already. I imagine we'll know more tomorrow when the Hawks have their locker cleanout and final pressers.

After the news of Gaudreau, Custance tweeted this:

Someone then said they thought Kane had been confirmed, and he said it wasn't certain yet, and that Kane was going to take the weekend to decide. I imagine the two players he's talking about in the above tweet are Kane and Jones.
