Moser? Thürkauf?

You're being unfair on Furrer here. With the actual Defense available he's an absolute lock. You cannot ice 6 young guns, you need some experience. Furrer is a guy who played big minutes in important games (league and international play) for 10 years or even more. He may not be the same player he was 3 or 4 years ago but he's still more than solid and brings something to this d-core which is strongly needed.

By the way, Untersander should be taken this year, he made another step and his defensive game is far more reliable than that from Loeffel.

Yes, Moser is clearly ahead of Wieser. Rüfenacht will maybe also get some consideration for this role, he's having great playoffs.

I thought Furrer had an average season, but a part of it is certainly due to Lugano's defensive system being a complete mess under Shedden. Untersander will be available for the last three exhibition games, that should be enough to show what he can do. But it will also depend on the Nashville players, Untersander is a lot less useful if you add Josi and Weber to Blum and Diaz.

Ya Understander could be a possibility, should Josi or Weber turn down the invit -or less likely, make it to the second round. And why not select Rathgeb? He could be a huge threat on the PP.

I disagrre about Rathgeb. Yes he is great on the PP but sucks at pretty much everything else. Fischer made a smimilar experiment with Martschini last year and we all know how that turned out...

Of course, with Josi, Weber, Blum and Diaz you wouldn't need Untersander but as long as you're not sure about Josi/Weber you should take him.

Rathgeb is still pretty young, a lot of time to improve on the defenisve side of the game. He's not ready yet, but he could be some time in the future.
And he's injured, btw.

Moser has had 1 goal in 11 playoff-games with a better team behind him.
Wieser scored 7 in 10.

His pace over the full season is about the same as Moser.
Wieser isn't that stupid anymore in terms of unneccessary penalties and his defense is pretty underrated.
We'll ice 8 or 9 wingers and I think D.Wieser should be one of them, clearly fills a need in this team.

Furrer is just an experienced body for me, not less but also not more. If we wamt to win something we need to aim higher than that.
Untersander is a good shout for example, Schneeberger too.

Please no Rathgeb/DuBois..

I agree that Wieser should have gotten a chance, but he's far from Moser's level.

Wieser hasn't recorded a single point in 15 WC games, he's a 4th liner at best. Moser has been a top 6 forward in 5 of his 6 international tournaments.

And good defensemen don't grow on trees, Furrer is definitely an upgrade over what's available now. I wouldn't call using Baltisberger or Heldner "aiming higher than that".

Well I'm far from saying Moser isn't worthy, he's one of my favourites on international stage.
It just popped up as a comparison because of the style they play. Should both be in the team IMO.

Bringing up Dino's WC stats is unfair though.
He was used mostly as 13th forward or 4th line grinder, he never had a scoring role.
About 5mins average TOI in 2015 and under 10mins in 2016.

It's true that he didn't have much ice time in 2015, the 4th line was Schäppi-Trachsler-Walker most of the time, if I remember correctly.

But last year the winger pairs were Niederreiter-Moser, Andrighetto-Hofmann and Ambühl-Hollenstein, there was no space for him apart from the 4th line.

This year, things don't look very different. Brunner, Hollenstein and Ambühl are already in the team, Bärtschi and Andrighetto will join next week and Moser should get the last top 9 spot. The only way Wieser would get a scoring role is if one of these player is injured. I still think he should have gotten a chance, but in the end he probably would have been cut or would have ended up on the 4th line.

I think the arguments in here about D/ depth Wingers are pretty legit. (It's a pitty Im missing spare time to join the conversation a bit more right now) About a lot of players you find some questionmarks easily. A guy that offered a mix of Walkers strengh /speed combo, Wieser's relentless effort, Scherwey's powerskating, checking and recklessness as well as Herzog's crease instincts and Rüfenacht's "canadien" and pest qualities would be obviously a fixture, but as it is right now, compromises have to be made. And of course Ambühl and Moser could play 4th line duties when needed, but it's unlikely.

In this case I see it as stv11 (Beat Sutter:D) As long as he can keep up his skating, Walker should be on this team IMO. As was said before, he offers a unique combo of strengh, size and skating as well as a heavy ( and much underused) shot, and plays Center if needed. He got holes in his game, but very important: he's one of the few swiss players, who doesn't have to adapt his game very much to international hockey to make it work. And there were a few international matches, where the opponent dominated the swiss physical and pretty much everyone was intimidated and inefficent. Walker on the other hand was just playing his game and was suddenly among the most recognisable swiss.

Though I've never been a fan of Furrer, with Streit, Seger , Vauclair,Blindenbacher and Dubois absent for various reasons, Im glad to have this guy and his experience on the roster.

D.Wieser and Hofmann should have gotten an invitation of course. Maybe some injuries.

The team for today's game:

Flüeler (Schlegel)

Geering - Heldner
Paschoud - Loeffel
Marti - Sutter
Genazzi - Baltisberger

Hollenstein - Romy - Praplan
Ambühl - Corvi - Brunner
Suter - Schäppi - Riat
Herzog - Almond - Baltisberger
Herren

Interesting lineup, I like the Corvi line.

Haas is the only player not dressed. I hope there's nothing wrong with his injury.

2-1 win with Brunner scoring the gamewinner. Did anyone watch it?

Of course, what a silly question! :D
(but I won't be able to watch the next one ;))

Not sure what to think of this game. Better hockey than last week, but it's expected during a WC training camp. Slovakia was the better team and could have won with better killer instinct, but Flüeler had a few big saves.

The biggest problem was the defense, a lot of clumsy plays and poor breakout passes. The result is that the forwards could rarely enter the offensive zone at full speed and the team was never able to use its skating quality. A shame as both goals came after a forward could carry the puck with speed into the offensive zone and pass it in the slot while another player was crashing the net.

Heldner (especially on the goal), Marti and Baltisbeger looked bad many times, they are too slow and can't do anything with the puck. Paschoud and Sutter were ok, Geering didn't have a bad game but he should be more noticeable at this level, Genazzi had a few good play and Loeffel was a bit disappointing offensively.

The Romy line didn't impress, especially Hollenstein who never seemed into the game, maybe he can't skate comfortably yet. The Corvi line took some time to gel but showed some flashes of what they are able to do, I would definitely try them again. The Almond line was good defensively, Baltisberger and Herzog were strong along the boards. Suter wasn't as noticeable as against France, but Riat had pretty good game.

The special teams were better than against France, especially the PK. There was only 3 minutes of PP, but it was enough to see some good setups. Unfortunately the passes weren't always good.

Based on this game, I would say that the next cuts should be Praplan and Herren. There won't be any additional defenseman next week, but if there were I'd say that Heldner and Baltisberger would be the players cut.

Malgin and Furrer will join the team for next week. Bärtschi and Andrighetto not ready yet, hopefully they will.

Herren, Phil Baltisberger and Enzo Corvi are out.

So that means, Corvi was only a placeholder for Malgin and an injured Haas... Not sure if I agree with that. (Even if Malgin has always looked tremendous in international games throughout his junior career, even better than Hischier IMO)

As it looks now, chances are fading that the Nashville guys will join.

Yeah, although it's still early and a lot can happen. Also an out in the 2nd round could normally allow them to join the team.

Kukan is out in the AHL and the Blue Jackets are down 0-2. That could be an option, too.

I had quick look at Saturday's game yesterday. Good game defensively, and Hiller was very solid. Good game by Paschoud.

Ambühl's was the best offensive line, him and Brunner are working well together. Hollenstein didn't have a bad game, but you can't help but feel he could do more.

I'm also surprised by Corvi being cut, I thought he had a good game on Thursday and would have deserved another chance. Disappointing that Andrighetto and Bärtschi won't play against Russia, hopefully there's nothing wrong with their injuries.

Who do you think will be called from Bern and Zug (and maybe Ambri)? Both goalies, Diaz, Blum and Moser should be locks if available. Untersander should get a look, and I thought that Schlumpf had great playoffs and should get a chance. Not a big fan of the other possibilities on defense, although Helbling or Grossmann could be an upgrade over a guy like Heldner, and Fora might warrant a try. At forward, Rüfenacht and Bodenmann should get a look. Not sure if Fischer will bother with Martschini, we saw he's limited at this level last year and he wasn't efficient in the playoffs. Suri had a terrible season but maybe he's worth a try in the bottom six?

And there's Plüss who's been discussed already.

Thought the same about Schlumpf, he played really solid in his own end, not the guy who creates much, but you need such hard workers. And he has the speed and the body to be efficient at a WC.

Hopefully Blum's injury isn't too bad, that'd be another blow. Untersander should get a very deep look, he made another great step, he could be faster but probably on both ends of the ice one of the best defenders in the swiss league.
Rüfenacht should also get a look, that was just very strong what he showed. And without stupid penalties he's even better. Bodenmann could also be useful because he can fill in in any role, Top-6, third line or even 4th line. And it's quite important to have such players in your team.

Just finished watching the u18 match vs Slovakia. As much as I'd like to watch Hischier at the worlds, that guy desperately needs some rest.
Glimpses of pure hockey wonders but often he looked like his legs were not up to the task of matching his brain.

Plüss says he'd consider it if he gets a call but he didn't spoke with Fischer for quite some time.

Doesn't sound too bad. Moser and Blum on the other side would be quite a blow, especially Moser is essential and Blum with so many other defenders missing also.

According to the original Watson article, Blum could barely hold his stick during the last game. Of course that's your typical Zaugg exaggeration, but it doesn't sound good. That leaves Diaz and Kukan (probably) as the only top defensemen available.

Let's hope St Louis will be more helpful than the useless Blackhawks.

With both Moser and Niederreiter out I think Wieser should get a chance. Some grit in front of the net is needed
