I'm still banking on the Islanders and Blues getting bounced in the opening rd.

And other than Tavares, the rest of the A Team players take a pass on Paris.

And I'm seriously running out of patience with Mackinnon. He needs an entire summer off to train. And if anybody runs in to him in the pubs of Cole Harbour, tell him to exit pronto and hit the gym.

Having run into MacKinnon a few times in the wilds of Nova Scotia, I don't think that gym time is an issue for him. He should probably focus less on bulking up though, since it seems like he's trying to get a build like Crosby's but that doesn't suit his style. He does need to play on a team with competent coaching and teammates who can do some of the creative work for him though.

ya, you're right, more time on skills training less on body...

and I agree, coaching and team is a mitigating factor to a certain extent, but I don't let players completely off the hook for that. He and a few other players have to take responsibility for a disastrous year.

on another front, U18 is quickly approaching. I haven't followed the 99s at all this year after the disaster that was Hlinka last summer. Any ideas as to what that team will look like? I briefly looked at it a few days ago...and it looked rather bleak.

Yes, MacKinnon should be performing better regardless of the situation, but he is still an industrious winger with elite tools who could prove very useful. He's very bulky now though, which hinders his best asset.

I don't follow the U18 at all. If someone from any team gives a performance that is noteworthy I will probably hear about it, but I don't watch any of it or look to read about it.

time for a bump...
was jumping in and out of the T.Bay v NYR and the Philly v CBJ games last night...

2 rookies that could be brought over are Point and Konecny. I wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of a 2015 WJC reunion of Point w/McDavid. Did he not play on a line with McDavid or was that Petan? I'll have to go back and refresh the old memory. but it would definitely pushing the limits of my rookie rule if Marner and Mantha tag along as well.

Konecny started off well but was derailed a bit by injuries. I'd give him the edge over Point....And other than Mantha, all 3 are smallish...something else to consider.

Virtanen started with McDavid and Lazar, then it was Petan. Konecny's injuries were beyond predictable. Undersized player with physical style making the jump to the NHL as a teenager. I would take the others before Konecny for this year, but young is fine here.

Do you follow the Avs? What are you running out of patience with? He's been fine on national teams.

Ya, my criteria for a possible Team Canada appearance has nothing to do with what that player did at a tournament 2 years ago when he was 19. As much as the prospect of a Drouin-MacKinnon reunion in Paris would be cool (I didn't watch the WCoH), there are a bunch of players outperforming Nate at the moment who look as though they'll be available. And quite a few of them shouldn't be outperforming Nate, hence the frustration.

I'll be upset if Mackinnon doesn't come to Paris in May. I agree with you, he has disappointed this year but he does tend to play very well when surrounded by great players and when there is something to play for (2014 playoffs, 2016 World Cup before the start of the season). And in all fairness Mackinnon would have many more assists this year if some of his line-mates were able to have a better finish (such as Rene Bourque for example).

I just ordered a Mackinnon jersey for May and if he does so happen to make it on the roster I'm going to desperately try to have him sign it somehow (if it's possible) :D:D.

If he doesn't come, oh well, I'll still get to see some crazy crazy players (only going to Canada and Finland games :naughty:).

Well we can confidently say we're not getting Ekblad regardless of how Florida does at this point.

Ideal Team:

Benn- Seguin- Stamkos
Hall- Tavares- Giroux
Duchene- Carter- Simmonds
O'Reilly- Scheifele- MacKinnon
Huberdeau

Muzzin- Doughty
Hutton- Ekblad
Matheson- Green
Barrie

Smith
Reimer

Team I expect to go:

Hall- Scheifele- MacKinnon
Duchene- Carter- Simmonds
Schenn- Horvat- Toffoli
Skinner- Couturier- Reinhart
Drouin

Hutton- Barrie
Matheson- Tanev
Gorges- Demers
Stecher

Smith
Mason

Mess the lines up however you want, they're just there for the players not in order. I expect that they will have something like this going.

If Hall goes again after two very successful World Championship campaigns and being very obviously snubbed by Hockey Canada for the gimmick tournament despite many holes on the wing, then his dedication to this tournament is beyond what 99% of Canadian players have ever shown.

Here's what I expect for the WHC:

Drouin-McDavid-MacKinnon
Huberdeau-Eakin-Marner
Pearson-Henrique-Simmonds
Domi-Horvat-Little
Mantha/Smith/Athanasiou

de Haan-Severson
Morrissey-Demers
Nurse-Stecher
Gorges

Mason/Talbot

I like Edmundson a lot, he's my type of defenceman (big, mean, tough) but he'll get struggle on the big ice. I would much rather try to go for someone like Troy Stecher from Vancouver or Morrissey from Winnipeg. We should definitely try to get players from the '93-'97 age group.

maybe, maybe not. I'm not convinced, but it would depend on who he's paired with + a few other factors. At any rate, it's worth a shot imo, so long as team and coaching is in place to gloss over a few of the experiments we take to Europe.

I'm curious about Scheifele. He's had a very strong year and was good for Canada in a primarily defensive role last year. He played in the gimmick tournament already, but from what I've read he has a very strong work ethic and likes playing as much as possible. As far as I know he is pretty healthy, and if the Olympics feature NHL players he will receive serious consideration from Hockey Canada. From Winnipeg fans, does he seem likely for this team?

Isn't he a given as a choice for this team? Big,skilled center amongst the league leaders in points.

I would think he is slam dunk if he wants to play.

Edit:I guess you must be talking about the olympics team and not the WHC team which is what this thread is about, my bad.

I meant is there any indication that he will or will not accept the invitation. I have no doubt that he will be asked. If he is there, he will be a huge piece for this team.

The let's not wait for the 1st. rd. to be over team. Take 23 guys and do the mini 4 day pre-tourney camp in Europe...

If Bailey struggles, swap him out for Skinner. If Kane struggles (which I think he will) move ROR to LW, Scheifele to C and Reinhart at RW. or alternatively, a ROR CARTER SCHEIFELE 2nd. line just may be the line to deliver the goods the entire tournament. Optimistic that Carter plays, as he hasn't played a WC since 06. There aren't too many international tourneys left to be played for Jeff. A tad over-optimistic that Doughty plays, but perhaps Carter and Muzzin twist his arm. Who knows?

There are still roster spots, so if say a McDavid is available, and he does the Sid Crosby phone call to HC to say he wants to play, then HC has to make room, right? They can't say no.

Many holes?

holes on the wing, in the sense that only 2 or 3 wingers were on the team. Now, I didn't watch, but didn't Jumbo Joe play LW? And with all due respect to Joe and the career he has had, Hall would have been the better and more deserving option... and checking Joe's stats - 1 goal 1 assist in 6 games! Ya, come on!
