I don't know about Smirnov, but Tyanulin is stronger on his skates than Abramov now.

Abramov will get his shot next year.

Fair enough but the edgework Abramov can do in tight spaces on that little rink in Gatienau is amazing I think he deserved a better look.

Possibly, but Russia has soooo many guys in camp that it's tough for everyone to get a look. He needed to impress in the Super Series and he just didn't do enough.

Lines from today's practice:

Rykov-Sidorov; Polunin-Vorobyov-Kaprizov
Sergachyov-Zborovskiy; Korostelev-Trenin-Tyanulin
Voronkov-Volkov; Yurtaikin-Alexeyev-Rubtsov
Dronov-Fazylzyanov; Karnaukhov-Kvartalnov-Guryanov
Chmykhov-Kudako; Urakov-Belyayev-Li

Sergachyov-Zborovskiy; Korostelev-Trenin-Tyanulin
Voronkov-Volkov; Yurtaikin-Alexeyev-Rubtsov
Dronov-Fazylzyanov; Karnaukhov-Kvartalnov-Guryanov
Chmykhov-Kudako; Urakov-Belyayev-Li

Bottom pairing and line likely to be cut?

If they haven't been cut yet, then I'm assuming that they'll get another chance tonight.

Which means someone is sitting.

I'd expect Bragin to deploy a lineup close to a final version in today's game and change it only if someone decides to do something stupid (like Guryanov last year). And yeah, I guess Belyayev's line can be considered the weakest one here by default. But we'll see.

That would be weird. The idea behind leaving extra guys around is to give an extra shot to earn a spot.

And they were given - Vs. Denmark and Vs. SKA, now it is the last friendly game and it should be spent on checking if all the cogwheels in Bragin's clock are working the way they should. If not - extra guys will be usefull to make emergency changes.

Bragin was simply not comfortable with the CHLers. And I don't mind - Korostelev and Tyanulin are meh.

This also sends an important message - when you leave for the CHL, you will have an uphill climb to make the national team. Unless you are as good as Sergachev or Zborovsky. Or can win faceoffs at a 70% rate like Trenin.

I think in this case it is much more simple - Tyanulin, Korostelev and also Fazylzyanov looked pretty much bad yesterday - made mistakes and got unnecessary penalties.

You're probably right. But it is always harder for the CHLers to get back to the stylistics of the Russian game. The message might not necessary be intended, but it is there.

I don't know if it is about CHL or not, but to make Bragin's team you need to play more disciplined game than those guys played yesterday.

so what's the issue here? Abramov, Korostelev and Tyanulin are either leading or 2nd on their teams in scoring. is it poor showings with the NT? FHR trying to dissuade future players from leaving for CHL?

It's Bragin's call and is very consistent with his thinking. He likes lines that click, and when the CHLers don't click he lets them go.

He was always like this. Bragin even prefers to roll the same lines on special teams, because he looks for chemistry.

Just stop creating those myths in NA. Nobody ever cares where the player plays at the moment.Of course the players in NA are less exposed to russian NTcoaching staff, but that was their decision and the obvious consequences with less bearing on their development though than the fact that they leave the russian hockey system. Ultimately it is just one tournament.

I think you are right. It is just too hard to accommodate guys who must of necessity develop a North American style, and who are too far away most of the year to be communicated with. Does Bragin have to go through their agents? Unless they are clearly better than available guys who play in Russia, they won't get that national team exposure that they desperately want. Also, such a policy either directly or indirectly promotes youth hockey in Russia, which is clearly needed.

So who is gonna be Kirill Kaprizov center for the tournament you think?

Mikhail Vorobyov.

They both play for Salavat and he has spent some of the season on his wing, maybe 40% at 5v5.

Also they have played together internationally for the last year.

Vorobyov is not flashy, or that high skilled. But he is defensively sound, a big body and is a pretty good playmaker.

On one hand this team is not very exciting and seems like there isn't enough talent to overcome difficult situations. On the other hand the defense seems deep and the team should be well balanced, maybe even better than a lot of the past teams.

The most worrying thing that I've seen so far is that they don't have enough character or skill when things start to go wrong. On other teams there would be atleast 1 or 2 more guys like kaprizov and polunin

2011 team was very unbalanced but had a few more game breakers that made the difference

Guryanov will need to step up. Big guy with skills and a brief reputation as a blue chip prospect.

He could easily relieve the pressure for the Kaprizov line by providing much-needed secondary scoring. He is, after all, an AHLer and has been playing productively as of late.
