Russian posters have criticized the CHL heavily and Russian players coming to Canada so young. They argue it is better for Russian players to remain in Russia for their hockey training.

What do you guys think of Provorov and Sergachev receiving their training in Canada? Provorov played in western Canada. The WHL is known for producing NHL calibre defenceman and being the most physical Junior league in the world. We embrace the violent side of the game in Western Canada.

First of all Provorov has also played in the USHL.

Then for the God knows how many times we told you that Provorv left Russia much earlier, played bantam hockey in Canada and thus can not be seen as an indication for anything as it is not an option for most Russians to go abroad that early anyway.

Sergachev is a 18y.o. prospect. Talking about him right now is exactly like talking about Yakupov in his draft year. We all know where we'ra at now with Yakupov.

Russia has lacked elite Dmen lately. Is there an irony that the two best young Russian Defenceman trained in Canada and played in the Canadian Hockey League?

So now where is the irony?

Perhaps coming over to Canada can benefit young Russians more than you guys are willing to acknowledge. Canadians love hockey, we take care of our hockey players and develop them properly.

No, young Russians coming to the CHL on an average become worse players. It's a stat by now. Defencemen might be an exception from the rule to some extent, but let's wait until that flood of russian D-men developed in the CHL enters the NHL. Rght now I can see Zadorov doing well and Provorov who as mentioned above is a Russian with basically all-NA-training and Sergachev who is still to young to judge. What's with the rest of russian D-men who chose the CHL? Even Orlov hasn't played in the CHL.

On the orher hand I also see Zaytsev who is praised highly so far by Toronto fans on here.

And do you imply with the last statemet that we in Russia don't take care of hockey players and don't know how to develop them properly? Serious question.

For me the topic of Russians in the CHL is very straight forward: it is bad for the national team, because Russians leaving disrupts the growth of the overall collective. Individually I think Russians can succeed even when they develop abroad, but that is beside the point and misses the real problem.

They really should. I'm not a fan of VHL. They seem to have their own agenda. There needs to be a bridge between MHL and KHL and VHL ain't it.

3 Leagues are enough for development. No bridges needed. IMHO.

Agreed. On the other hand, smarter (richer) teams have their own VHL teams, I think that anyway the VHL could/should be even better, with more KHL teams having own farm teams and maybe a couple of teams more from abroad to raise the level and make it more appealing.
We're OT.

Gonna be that guy, what are the chances for leaf picks Korostelev, Chebykin, and Bobylev? On the outside looking in it seems like Korostolev is the only one with a realistic shot and if he keeps his play up should be there

I think Chebykin should be there, for Korostelev it depends if he will be good in the Canada/Russia series games, Bobylev - unlikely to make it.

Yeah, from here it looks rather different.Chebykin is a safer pick. Korostelev has to be at his best in the Russia-Canada-series to get a spot. And I trust Bragin's judgement. There was some uproar when he left Scherbak a first rounder off the WJC roster after the Subway Super Series then. And look now, Scherbak can't find a way out of AHL.(Another example of a russian prospect leaving Russia at the wrong time).

The series will be do or die for the CHL guys. They have 2 games to impress. Hopefully they understand that.

For north american conspircy theories fans. There is no bias for choosing players from Russia or the CHL. There is such thing as exposure obviously. The coaching staff has more input on players playing in the MHL/VHL/KHL obviously, but in the end they follow all prospects for quite some time now and their current performance will have a major impact on the decision.

The two tunaments(4-Nations in Europe and the Canada-Russia-Series) will give the last balance shifts before the WJC.

Provorov played his last 2 seasons for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League. The WHL has long been known as a conference in the CHL that produces good NHL Dmen.

Fair point regarding him leaving early, he left much younger than most.

The irony comes from how much the CHL gets bashed for Russian player development. The best two Russian D prospects developed in the CHL. I watched Provorov many times live over the past two seasons. His last season he was the best player in the WHL in my opinion, he had one of the best seasons I have seen out of a Dman in many years. He was outstanding, perhaps Dmen might be an exception?

No I didn't intend it to be read that you don't take care of hockey players. I know how much Russia loves hockey. It was more a response to the idea that the weaker players get moved to defence early and the good players remain at forward.

By the way, Andrei Svechnikov looks good. Great player coming up.

You are making an anecdotal argument based on 1 or 2 very talented guys who do well enough to advance to the NHL. I think moving to NA hurt Zadorov - he has never reached what his clear potential is! Provorov is a very talented player, but we'll see what his trajectory is. If they start sending him down to the AHL, as they did with Zadorov, he will start to lose confidence and digress.

If the goal is to play in the NHL, and you separate defense from offense, then there might be added benefit to learning the game on the small NA ice. But, as of yet, there are no "success models" for going to the CHL, but a lot of unexpected failures.

Link to tournament?

Anyone making a good case for the WJC?

Well, the roster there has more locks on it that the Canada Russia Series one, because most KHL/VHL players are there and aren't going to Canada.

Stats are there now. Samsonov got lit up and pulled the start of the second period:shakehead

Stupid penalties at the beginning and a goal let in. Antoher penalty in the second and a goal:shakehead

Bad last 10 minutes:shakehead

On the positive side of things the guys that are supposed to be good are good, Polunin-Vorobiev-Kaprizov line at it. Homer vote for Sidorov. He is impressive in the KHL. He should be a treat against juniors.
