Lauzon should have been there over Chabot. Not a doubt in my mind either.I watched them in QMJHL lots

Go with a bigger and longer camp next year. Enough with gifting spots especially to the goalies. Even if you have to release players for camp 1 week earlier than usual just do it.

So what watching doesn't make you an unbiased authority.

Chabot was good. Lauzon could have made it over another player as well. Why are you singling out Chabot.

Patrick will bring something great to this team. He's a late bday so won't be a 17 yr old.

Is Patrick comparable to Matthews or the Finns in terms of talent?

I recently pumped the Nolan patrick thread asking for opinions of the kid, since he missed the 2016 draft by 4 days, we're will be if he made to this years draft, apparently he's sandwiched between the fins, lol.

But I think we have better shot at gold next year, this is with Lowry not coming back as coach, we have serious studs on defence with , bean, fabbro, claugue etc etc.

Babcock likes his prospects to develope so,I think marner will be back with vengeance.

Tyler benson will be a 4th line destroyer for the Canadians.

We need some shutdown D though, we always do better with guys like Phaneuf, Staal, Schenn, Myers types shutting guys down, we didn't have that at all this year and thats crucial. Who can fit that role?

There should be a doubt in your mind if that's what you think, he was probably one of the best players on this team. There were far worse defenseman on the team.

Lauzon, Juulsen, Meloche, Spencer. There's always players like that around for Canada but it depends if it's worth taking them over a more talented player that won't bring the same physicality and defence. I think Fabbro can fill the role as a '98 but there are other '97s available.

Canada always has sufficient talent to win at least a medal,
- if they gel as a team
- if they play with discipline
- if they get good goal tending
- if they have some puck luck
- if they are well coached

At least 1 and 2 are significantly dependent on 5 and teams with those characteristics seem to get more than their share of the puck luck.

How many of those five factors do you think Canada had this year? Yeah, I think so too.

The other countries are too good for us to expect success if we have a team of all stars playing as individuals.

Anyone think that Virtanen made a good argument that returnees shouldn't automatically make the team?

would be nice if that were the case, but Hockey Canada has to appease NHL GMs in dealing with players on loan to TC and for the sake of future/ potential players that will be assigned to TC. So, that includes guarantees on playing time/roles, shielding them from criticism if they underperform or spinning it that such and such a player is indeed playing well (Strome) when in fact he wasn't playing all that well...because if you piss off that NHL GM, from whom you may request either that same player the following year or a different player in subsequent years, the NHL GM will just say, no, I don't think so. Didn't like how you handled it with player x in 20__

Hockey Canada is in between a rock and a hard place. a lot of it is their own doing.

There was no one who should have made it over him. He had a horrible tournament, but utilized properly and held in check by a decent coach he is more useful than whoever would have replaced him (Hawryluk/Merkley).

The Canadian coaches made a point of stating that Brett Connolly hadn't made the team automatically in 2012 even though he came from the NHL, and proceeded to under-utilize him for that whole tournament. Kind of like the bizarro Virtanen. In pretty much any case other than Kyle Clifford in 2011 an NHL player is going to be good enough to make the team. It's just about utilizing them properly.

Let's not pretend tho because a player had a terrible WJC, he will be a terrible NHL player.

I can count at least 10 players who were god awful in the world juniors, and were good NHL players.

Same with players who were amazing in the world juniors, who are not even NHL players anymore.

The worry with JV is that he is having a bad year overall, NOT just the WJC, but before that.

That's the real issue with him.

There's a fairly decent chance Konecny makes the Flyers next year and if that's the case I don't know if Hextall would loan him.

I dunno. Considering he has to be the front-runner for captain of the team, I think Hextall would view that as a worthwhile experience for his long-term development.

It's not like the Flyers will be contenders next year anyway.

It could go either way.

Crouse, Strome, Marner, and Chychrun will all be in the NHL.

Patrick-Barzal-Konecny
Merkley-Stephens-Gauthier
Dubois-Beauvillier-Jost
Harkins-McLeod-Benson
Vilardi

Chabot-Bean
Dermott-Fabbro
Lauzon-Juulsen
Roy

Hart
Wells

Konecny will be captain and Stephens and Chabot will be alternates.

its too bad NHL are so greedy they won,t let players play that are eligible to play because if Canada had all eligible players that could have played Canada would have won Gold hands down

nothing is hands down in a 1 game winner takes all scenario, but give Canada all eligible players + give the U.S. theirs (Eichel, Larkin and Hanifan) I'd pay big bucks to see that 1 game match-up. Make it a best 4 out of 7 and that would be some of the best hockey going. Both teams would clearly be hands down the 2 most stacked teams at the tourney.

because of the quality of players and skill I would still favour Canada but these players that aren,t allowed to play are allowed to play in NHL International Hockey and still could get injured
