-Marjamaki was brutal, that transition game, oh boy.
The primary reason I'm not buying the "Can't do much with this defensive material" argument is the simple fact that Team Europe had defensemen like Ehrhoff, Sbisa and Streit having really quick, fast transitions. They played some really good fast-paced North American puck control hockey, the same type that Finland was supposed to play. Finnish material should be good enough to do that if players like those can do it at a very high consistency.

Oh well, I don't think that the US team in that game really challenged them properly. They were universes behind the tempo and discipline of the brutal North American forecheck against us. Let's first see how they play against Canada to assess how they really perform under proper pressure. Our defence looked really scared, slow and unconfident - and I don't think it was a failure of game tactic but failure of the player material to execute the tactic properly. So, we do have a problem with our material.

It's not just the USA team and Finland has played vs USA and Sweden too and TE handled both much better.

I think it's a tactic failure, I doubt they could manage to fail to follow the tactics in every single game so far.

I'm not convinced this was a true showing of how good/bad Finland is.

I keep looking at it, but the only bite that's shown is when its over by two hits from Komarov, he should have done that all game. Nobody else. Passes are bad, the pass to Filppulas feet leading to the 3-0 or 4-0 goal perfect example.
This isn't how Finland plays.

So what is it? Did Marjamäki try to force a non-working game plan? Were the players not motivated? Jet lag?

Much work needs to be done, but I have always felt that Finland is an emotional team, we're either in it to win or not at all. Today was a showing that.. Never even started.
Abysmal.

You can only be as good as the other guy lets you be, but still - we stank the place up.

To my mind (apart from the crazy first minutes) they did attempt to play our traditional puck control but the defence was so shaky under pressure that they simply couldn't get the puck to the attackers for balanced and controlled counter attacks, or even to rhythm the game. Either they played the opening pass really badly and hurriedly or so slowly that the attack couldn't start properly or they even lost the puck.

I'm sure we know in principle how to play against quick, skillfull, high and hard forecheck, but it was too quick, too skilled and too hard for us so that we simply couldn't execute our game plan. I think we were simply too bad today.

Re-watching the game, first five minutes looked really good. I think Finland were missing leadership to carry that on. The game totally collapsed .

Well, I just think that in the long run we couldn't have competed with that speed... Though one has to admit that we didn't compete even when we tried to control the tempo more. Maybe actually bit more old fashioned straight forward and more physical Finnish game would have worked better.

I remember Selanne told after previous World Cup players didn't accept at all 'euro schema' coaching staff tried to drive in.

By saying leadership missing I meant there was no one today admit **** is not going to work. NHL players are not familiar with 'meidän peli' and it's unproven in the small rink anyways.

What a brutal showing. Koivu losing the puck to McJesus on the boards told it all. Get a wheelchair or a rocking chair made of birch, at least, Mikko, and convert to McJesus followers! And btw - thanks for everything.

The evolution of the game has spoken. Ugh.

And this goes to that clueless greenhorn coach Lauri Berry Hill Billy also. - Hey. This is no kindergarten called Luga. Play some more slow moleass breakouts what, stupido. Hah.

What a disgrace.

Damn that was brutal. I had to switch off after 4-0.

I don't know how to even start to fix this, hope Marjamäki does. Good thing we are facing two European teams next.

Well. My internal jukebox is now set up to play the Benny Hill theme every time they show Lauri. Thank you very much for that.

The Sweden-Finland game will be so intense now! Finland have to at least take it to overtime to avoid missing the semi-finals. That should motivate the finns!

Just reading an NHL article and came across this quote, "Marjamarki said goaltender Pekka Rinne, who made 39 saves, was the best player for Team Finland". http://ice.wch2016.com/recap?id=2016060104

Was he really their best player? All night he was kicking out dangerous rebounds or losing track of the puck under his pads, behind him, or beside him. he didn't look sure of himself at all tonight and I'm actually shocked he made 39 saves. As bad as he was though, was there a skater on the ice who did anything useful tonight for Finland?

Well, Laine's attempt for a team wake-up call on Larkin was okay, but maybe Lauri didn't want to add fuel to the fire by naming him.

Too many stupid mistakes. None of the goals really should've happened.

1st goal, Ristolainen tries to hit Matthews's head off instead forcing him outside, bad rebound by Rinne.

2nd goal, Ristolainen turns the puck over twice and nobody covers Gaudreau in front of the net.

3rd goal, Another bad rebound by Rinne, Lepistö goes to cover the wrong player in front of the net, Filppula forgets to cover Drouin.

4th goal, Terrible turnover by Filppula under no pressure, another rebound by Rinne.

Sorry, the kids dominated you. Even my Finnish brothers will admit that.

McDavid and his line dominated. Suomi have weak D. Develop your Dmen Finland. You guys have awesome forwards, put some talent on D.

If you do not develop talent on D, then Canada will own you in best on best. Who is close to warrior lads like Doughty and Burns? No One.

Canada remains the Northern King. We are the toughest civilization.

All?

A defence is needed. Sorry, any Barrister denies that premise. You were conquered.

The defense is coming.. They might be ready for 2022 olympics :P
- Ristolainen
- Määttä
- Juolevi
- Vaakanainen

Getting better. Canada still way ahead.

What about Niemalainen? Love him as an Oilers fan. Plus we have Pulju, we love our Finns in the North. Come to HFOil.

Canada still ahead, but Oiler fans love our Finnish brothers. Come to Canada, we will let you sleep in our house, drink beer with you and treat you as family.

I just quickly named some of the prospects ;D

Yes Pulju is great prospect, but he's not a defender ;)

And yes.. i rank atleast Canada and Sweden front of us.. US might also be infront.

Suomi is not defeated.

Sisu time. If Suomi beat Russia and Tre Kronor, they advance.

atleast Canada, Sweden and maybe USA? Come on dude. Se have worst team on paper in this tourney.
Teamplay and spirit is what usually keeps us up there, but talentwise we are down right there with the Czechs.

Not World Cup but 2010 Olympics.
