Tampa Bay dealt with its first of such reports Wednesday morning, when a student said she was chased by someone in a clown mask and outfit at a bus stop near Largo High School. About 2½-hours away, Gainesville police dealt with its second report of a suspicious clown on Tuesday night. At the same time, unsettling videos of the Ocala clown and another in Pensacola have gone viral.
There have been other clown sightings that have been nothing to laugh at:
• Middlesboro, Ky.: Police said they arrested 20-year-old Jonathan Martin for "causing alarm" after he was seen crouching in the woods wearing a clown suit and mask.
• Greenville, S.C.: An apartment complex and law enforcement received reports of clowns trying to lure children into the woods there.
• Greensboro, N.C.: Someone in a scary clown outfit lurked in a wooded area, according to reports, then was chased away from the area by a bystander wielding a machete.
• Alabama: At least nine clowns have been arrested and prosecuted for making terrorist threats.
• Pottsville, Pa.: Two people wearing clown-like clothing driving a pickup truck were reported to be scaring teens and children.
• Ebensburg, Pa. A woman reported a "Peeping Tom" clown looking through her window.
• Green Bay, Wis.: An actor claimed someone dressed as a scary clown holding black balloons was actually a marketing stunt to promote a short horror film.
•Dayton, Ohio: There have been three reports of clown sightings in the Dayton area. In Franklin, a woman said she was chased by a clown. In Brookville, police found Halloween masks in the woods after children reported seeing clowns in the woods. In Greenville, a man said he was chased down by two people dressed as clowns with white painted faces.
Law enforcement is trying to figure out what's behind these sightings: Pranksters? Criminals? Social media-fueled hysteria?
So far, there's been no clear answers.
