I figured this thread can be about 2014 predictions, and the state of 2018 predictions

Reading through some of these are hilarious. People claiming no way Sharp or MSL are on the team but also that Myers and Chet Pickard would be choices. Even Dave Bolland's name appears a few times.

Lots can change in 4 years, one common theme is that people think that young players will take a lot of the spots, but that almost no one over 30 exists. Players like Richards are on virtually every team too. Same with Hall and Myers.

The theme is that too much stock is placed in guys who are 22 and younger competing for a spot. Even undrafted players. How many players on Team Canada, Sweden, USA and Russia were drafted 4 drafts or less years ago (thats the 2010 Taylor Hall draft)?

Fowler from 2010. Tarasenko as well. Landeskog was in the 2011 draft.

Sad to see how poor Pääjärvi and Markström has developed since. They were in many of the Swedish line-ups.

Chet Pickard has been playing in the second division in Sweden since then.

This was interesting.

For team Canada, alot of people had:

Evander Kane - As a Jets fan, this really disappointed me
Mike Richards
Dany Heatley
Eric Staal
J. Staal
Taylor Hall

Tyler Myers - was apparently a guarantee

Fluery

Putting PK Subban on the team was laughed at numerous times

Toews and Crosby are the only to players from this team that I'll pick as shoe ins for 2018. Other than that, who knows?

Leaving a Finland 2018 prediction here:

MiG - Barkov - Pulkkinen
J.Jokinen - Filppula - Teräväinen
T.Ruutu - M.Koivu - Korpikoski
Komarov - Lehterä - Salomäki
Hartikainen
MaG
Armia

Pitkänen - Määttä
Vatanen - Ristolainen
Järvinen - Kukkonen:sarcasm:

Rask
Ortio
Lehtonen

pietrangelo

Post #965 from the linked thread in the first post here, dated 05-08-2012. All forwards except Wheeler and miss on Ryan (and in line combos for 1 and 4, and swapping centers in 2 and 3! Goalies spot on if Howard not injured. Definitely a better defense (sans Byfuglien) than the USA actually brought along. Astounding prediction.:yo::handclap:

I'm surprised Mike Green wasn't mentioned more often. In 2010 him not being on the Olympic team was a bit of a surprise. It wasn't the wrong choice however, but still a bit of a surprise considering he had 31 goals the year before and was in the middle of back to back first team all-star seasons as well as Norris runner up. I'll be honest I had him on my team initially in 2010. I didn't even think of Seabrook.

Obviously he wasn't even close to being a threat to make this team but in 2010 we didn't know his offense would dry up 4 years later and that he still would be a lousy playoff performer.

It's great to leaf through these prediction threads afterwards.

The guy can (and probably will) improve, but his performance over the last two weeks has to be a knock against him already...

Ha.

And LMAO at all the Myers love

 We had such high hopes for him...

We've all been wrong about players. Thats half the fun is looking a this and realizing, yeah I was wrong, but here I was right. Its all in good fun after all.

You should google some of the polls that have existed. Ive seen Kadri lose polls nearly 2 to 1 to Scott Glennie. He routinely lost polls to Shroeder, MPS, and Glennie and was claimed to be the worst.

Im sure there were just as many Luke Schenn will be a fantastic #1 d a few years ago.

Reading these predictions between 2010 to the actual 2014 teams kinda show that young players being drafted now and until 2017, have virtually no chance of being on the 2018 roster. Only JT and Duchene made it from the 2009 draft for Team Canada. Only Stepan, Carlson, and Fowler made it for Team USA from any draft between 2008 and 2013.

I saw a thread where someone listed a defenseman ready to be drafted this year for Team USA and as good as that player might be, its a long shot.

My opinion but I dont see Duchene and Pietrangelo as locks. Certainly they have good shots, but if there are two young guys I could see getting "Seabrooked" its them.

Duchene was great, but the issue with him is that hes definitely better at centre than wing (when he has played with Tavares at the Worlds, JT usually moves to wing). Tavares, Toews and Sid will very likely be 3 of the 5 centers taken. Then you have Giroux, Seguin, Mackinnon, all top 6 talents who could either play center, or be moved to wing. Steven Stamkos is there too. Finally, you have the kids, Ryan Johansen and Mark Scheifele, both of whom have the ability to develop into centers that fit the Toews / Getzlaf / Bergeron mold that Canada loves.

As for Pietrangelo, again, Canada went with 4 LD and 4RD's and it proved to be the right call. That means he will be more than likely competing for one of 3 sports (I agree Doughty is a lock) with Subban, Weber, Seabrook (a guy who IMO is actually playing the best hockey of his life now), Aaron Ekblad (who for some reason people keep plugging in as a LD), Travis Hamonic, and Dougie Hamilton.

And in my honest (but probably crazy opinion), I might even call Ryan Murray a lock. Murray has shown tremendous progress and potential this year. Shooting left gives him a major advantage, and he will be about the same age doughty is now

lol lots of funny stuff, I think all that indicates is that making predictions are stabs in the dark. Though a lot of the US guys got their forward group to be pretty accurate...

Only forward locks I see are Crosby, Toews, Tavares, Stamkos
D: Doughty
G: Price

No way Duchene or Benn are locks. Look at Staal and Richards.

While I would say they have a better chance than most, its still 4 years.

I would agree that Crosby, Toews, Tavares, Stamkos are seen as locks barring major unforeseen issues, Doughty, and possibly Price but goalies are so hard to predict and figure out that while I would put him on the team if I had to pick the team today, he would be the only Canadian goalie that I would put on Team Canada's "more than 50% likely to put on the team" catgory.

honestly i dont think the team looks a lot different than it did this year.

Keith will be 34
Nash 33
Weber 32
Vlasic 30
Bouw 34
Pietrangelo 28
Subban 28

guys i dont think will be back
kunitz
carter
MSL
sharp
Marleau

I still think you could have had Richards this time around and he would have done well- so that's not really a pick to rag on someone about. At least not like the Myers picks.

Post #961 had a more correct defense...

But Couturier?

EDIT: OK I suppose at that time it wasn't apparent whether he'd play for Canada or USA.

Somewhat surprised, well confused to be honest, that people are putting Price on their roster over Cam Ward. I thought everyone was over all this Jesus Price ******** by now.

Funny in hindsight, though I guess at the time you could defend it seeing as Price had lost his job to Halak that year.

I think Sweden and Canada are on a collision course for the Gold Medal game in 2014.

BlackAces is a psychic!

My lucky guess for Finnish roster @ 2018 OLY

MiG - Barkov - Laine
J.Jokinen - Filppula - Teräväinen
Puljujärvi - M.Koivu - Korpikoski
Komarov - Lehterä - Salomäki
MaG
Armia

Pitkänen - Määttä
Vatanen - Ristolainen
Järvinen - Pokka
Lindell
Hietanen

Rask
Saros
Lehtonen/Ortio
