I don't have any problem with this.. if we can't upgrade within reason at center or the blueline.. so... just dont think Brassard and Zucc are worth long term investments quite yet (Brassard, more so than zucc)

I've not really been a Brassard fan from the get go, but I admit he made me eat some crow last year. I'd still move him in a heartbeat if they had an upgrade available. That said, with no other options they are going to have to pay him a reasonable amount, even if it is only short-term.

Zucc absolutely needs to be locked up long-term.

I'm hesitant. Unless JT Miller has a unexpectedly phenomenal year, that Top-9 would probably be very 'meh' down the middle. Also unsure about Brassard as the #2C.

I share those concerns, but looking at this team in the cap reality that they have to work in, I honestly think that's the most palatable option. Bringing anyone big in means someone big is going to have to go out. It's just the reality of the amount of space they have.

Plus, this year's team was just as meh in the middle. Richards didn't really leave huge shoes to fill. That line never ran off of him.

Also, going that route allows them to keep the top 4 D at least until the deadline, when they'll have a better idea of where Allen and McI stand.

The cap is a reality though. To make a splash in either department will cost the opposite of a splash, a sizable downgrade, in some other department. This isn't a UFA day where Sather has an infinite amount of money and space to sign whoever he wants.

Maybe Sather, Gorton, whoever is in charge, is learning the value of your own young players playing above their contracts. Seems like Gorton has always understood this. Maybe he's getting a little more of the reigns.

I feel like that's what we always say, and this guy always manages to find a way to make a big time move.

The Gomez/Drury offseason we figured we only had room for one of them. He managed to sign both at gross overpayments.

There's no one that really comes to mind that he can do that to this offseason, but I think he makes two moves that are high profile.

I'm praying Spezza or Thornton isn't one of the ones, but only time will tell.

With the assumption that we resign everyone (but Boyle, since he seems to want to get paid + have a bigger role than he would get here), here's a little something i mocked up. Thoughts?

FORWARDS
Rick Nash ($7.800m) / Derek Stepan ($3.075m) / Martin St. Louis ($5.625m)

Beukabeum has been raving about McIlrath.

We have too many defenders who don't contribute to offense. Something needs to give.

Girardi, Staal, Stralman, Klein, McIlrath, even J. Moore and Allen aren't offensively inclined.

Stepan
Richards
Brassard
D. Moore

Is worlds better than this:

Stepan
Brassard
Miller
D. Moore

Again, I'm to necessarily opposed to it.

Those signings were in 2007, a long, long time ago. Gorton wasn't even in the picture at all then either.

Plus, we've still got Nash and MSL, who were "splash" deals, and who are paid appropriately. There comes a point where you legitimately can't fit another big guy. This team is already there.

And again, the cap. It is what it is. Any big move in means a big move out. It's not just throwing money at UFAs when you have this little room and all these guys to sign. Who of real value can Sather move after the season this team just had and not look like an idiot? Staal is pretty much the only one, and even the more casual fans would probably be up in arms about that.

I think we're going to see the move for a 1/2c and a pmd defenseman.

I'm honestly curious about whether or not Staal can play the other side. If so, I'd wonder about moving Girardi, having Staal be the rock on the McD pairing, keeping Stralman on the second and seeing how to maneuver the rest of that.

I'm not completely convinced that Moore won't improve, I think he showed some promise with the puck this last year, but if he's going to step it up, it's going to have to be this coming year.

I didn't fill them all in.. I gave long term contracts to both Zucc and a multi year to Brassard (3.8 for 2 years), and I don't have a #2 center, or the bottom pairing of the D.. extras, but that still leaves almost 10M of cap space.. There is stuff the Rangers can do this off season.

I think we're going to see the move for a 1/2c and a pmd defenseman.

Where are they getting the assets for two moves?

If the moves don't require many assets, how can we be sure they're going to help?

They can't sign anyone since a.) no one is available and b.) the cap concerns.

No team is going to dominate in today's NHL. This Kings team won 3 of their 4 finals games in OT and they were about as deep top to bottom as you can be.

Don't try to build a team with a goal that isn't reachable. The goal is to run with the big dogs, which this team is already capable of. How many times have we seen teams make the "over the top" trade and then lose? A lot more than we've seen them do it and win. Building a team just doesn't work that way.

I'd like to see the Ducks and Blues go on a run before I anoint them as the powerhouses that some already do. We can talk all day, but action is action, winning is winning. Actually being a good team determines whether or not you have a good team, not whether or not you have the things that HF gets all hot and bothered about.

The Kings and Hawks are great. This year's NYR team could have put the Hawks to the test, and they just barely lost to the Kings.

Massive turnover is not necessary at all. The kids will grow up and get better, and everyone else will become more comfortable with one another as they grow together if this team can be mostly kept intact. Plus, these guys are hungry for a cup now, I don't want half of them bringing that hunger to other teams.

Yeah it was close AND they were lucky but they willed past their competition.
I didn't say as dominant as early 70s Canadien team.
Kings were arguably most dominant team this year.
Relative?
Sure.
But enough to cut the mustard.

As to turnover, that is more based on how good your roster already or is not or required moves due to cap.
We ARE good.
We are NOT THAT good.
And have to address cap picture also --- people need to be moved.

Can Sather just stand pat and not replace our #2C, after a run to the SCF? We'll see.

I doubt it.

I think in the past, Thornton would be the guy he would typically target.

With Gorton, I'm predicting ROR or the flavor of the week - Kadri.

ROR is so similar to Bergeron. Kadri fits right in with the speed of the group.

After that, there's going to be a PMD, now that Richards is gone. Who it is... I don't know? Do they want Diaz to step up and fill that spot in? They need a right handed shot.

As much as I don't want to make a big move, it would be much easier to stomach if the guy coming back was young and had a future with the team.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a "big move"".. I don't consider a 2nd line center (so that moves Brassard down to the #3) a "big move"

This would be my roster for next year right now:

You can always drop Lindberg and Fast to the AHL and spend that money on another center, too.

It's a vastly unpopular opinion, but Niskanen.

I think he'll cost too much. What are other pmd options that can be had through a trade. Doesn't Montreal have Magnus Nygren who disliked playing in Hamilton? Smart, Swedish right-handed defenseman and he's relatively young. Not sure of the cost

with the Leafs having a fire sale (everyone but Bernier/Rielly/Kessel/forgot the other guy), would anyone be interested in Franson to pair with Mcdonagh on the PP?

No.
only take Franson as a favor to TOR if he is cap balance/throw in on a bigger deal, like us getting JVR or them taking Nash.
