Shesty would've been a mid-2nd round pick had he been in North America. I don't really put much stock where Russians are taken. We took those guys over Sorokin (who was taken over Shesty), too, who is still in Russia and may not come over for another year or longer. KHL guys are just viewed different (and rightfully so sometimes) in the draft.

Sorokin is probably a late 1st round pick if he was in North America during his draft year.
This is why we have (had) McIlrath instead of Tarasenko but go ahead w this great line of thinking.

... what if with Benoit Allaire, he's somehow going to improve..

Imagine how good Shesty is going to be in a couple years when he's got the book on every shooter and has seen everything there is to see at the NHL level.

I mean...this is true...what's also true is the flip side. How will he react when shooters get the book on him.

With Henrik it was high glove, and he adapted. Well see with Igor. It's very impressive what he's done and how he plays. He's not at all like Henrik. I felt like Henrik relied solely on his reflexes early on, that's why he sat so far back. Igor challenges shooters more, and he's got a phenomenal glove hand and stick handling ability...way better than Henrik has ever had. Henriks a bigger more imposing figure in goal, which is why he didn't have to challenge as much.

Kinda incredible...we've been so spoiled. In my lifetime it was Beezer, Richter, Henrik, and now maybe Igor. That's nuts for 1 franchise.

Anyone else still going to argue that 'Igor hasn't proved anything' and thus Georgiev remains the heir apparent?

While this performance is better than even the lofty expectations I had for him, it's not that shocking for those of us who followed and observed him over the past few years.

One thing I am really excited for is when the players get used to his puck-handling skills. It must be insane going from Hank who, everytime he touched the puck it was like a live grenade, to this kid.

He's awesome.

I also think he's going to score a goal at some point, which is a crazy thought to have.

He would be the 13th goalie in NHL history to do so, and the 2nd Russian after Evgeni Nabokov. Martin Brodeur is the only goalie with 2 goals.

Osgood, Ward, Nabokov, Billy Smith, Rinne, Theodore, Hextall, Mike Smith, Mason, Rhodes and Noronen all have 1 in the reg season

Brodeur and Hextall each have 1 in the post season

Doesn't that mean Hextall has two goals as well? :D

I was always surprised Dipietro never netted one.

I think that it was Kreider who made a comment that the forwards need to adjust as they are not used to having the goalie actively work to complete saucer passes to them.

Confirmed with Link: - Rangers Select Igor Shestyorkin (G - Russia) with 118th Overall Pick

Often when a draft pick pans out well, I always find it incredibly fun to read people’s initial reactions. Whole lot of hot takes in this thread. My absolute favorites are “This kid will never play ahead of Lundqvist!” There were so many people, not unreasonable, that wanted and expected him to come over in 2-3 years. This is one of those true examples of how sometimes a lot of time, patience and foresight is needed to develop a player who can fill a need in the future. Even if his numbers let up a little, in my opinion we were extremely lucky to have drafted him at this spot in the draft.

He has a great ability to turn a high danger opportunity into the end of a play. There isn’t a big rebound that leads to scrambling and running around and an additional 2 or 3 more high danger chances. He eats pucks and the offensive momentum ends. Along with his elite puck skills it’s tougher to generate offense against us.

people will look at stats and say how come Lundqvist has to face so many more high danger chances. The team plays worse in front of him. Well when you don’t handle the puck well at all and give up a lot of additional chances because you don’t hang on to pucks, or you’re playing too deep and are constantly kicking pucks into the slot and ending up on your back that’ll leave your team running around.

doesn’t happen with Igor in there. He makes the whole team better and calms things down when we’re in trouble.

I love reading the older threads. I have no idea who half the people are though. Its like you remember the names or avatars but are they still here or under new alias?

I was looking for this thread last night. Some unsure responses given the Rangers had the best tandem in the league in Lundqvist and Talbot and had just taken Halverson and Skapski. Kudos to the Russian posters who popped in to say "hey this kid is actually really talented" and to those here who said "Lundqvist is going to be 37 in 5 years."
