Not understanding the hate for England... oh well. I'm saddened that one of the teams I root for has been eliminated. Leaves me with the US, Netherlands and Germany. My heritage is pretty good at soccer. Wish I was too...

I'm Scotch/Irish and Swedish. The only thing I ever picked up from my ancestors was a pair of dirty mits on the ice and an insatiable hunger for alcohol

Why Asia gets more teams than CONCACAF I'll never know. Great showing for our conference so far.

Well, the countries next in line from the CONCACAF region would be Jamaica, Panama and El Salvador. Trust me: Those teams are worse than Iran, Japan, South Korea and even China and Iraq.

I think Jamaica and Panama could hang with China and Iran myself. The drop after the first 3 is big in both regions, though.

When Canada manages to get it's national team into a respectable shape it should change, but for now it's certainly an acceptable number. It'd probably be best to cut one from Asia and give it to Europe, but we all know how FIFA is. Pretty soon Qatar and Saudi Arabia will get automatic bids.

canada has a long way to go for that to happen lol

Realistically, there should be more teams from Europe. There's no way Sweden shouldn't be here. This is supposed to be the best of the best. Iran isn't going to need weeding out, they suck. There's literally a negative % chance of them winning the world cup.

Sweden could have hung with the big boys.

It's just ridiculous that they allocate X amount of spots just to have those areas represented. 1 team and 2 max from specific regions should be allowed. OFC should just be merged, they're a joke, same goes for CAF.

I realize the travel would be difficult within international play, but watching a game like today where Argentina has like 80% possession and Iran is just sitting with 11 men behind the ball is not what the world cup is about.

I agree that Europe has a few spots too few, but it's hard to fault the Iran for this game. I think they are playing pretty well. The real jokes so far have been the African teams, you really have to ask if they deserve their five spots.

However, it's a World Cup so I want teams from all over the world. If you're not good enough to qualify, you're probably not good enough to win it anyway.

Yea, I understand where people in your group are coming from and you're right, I can't fault Iran, they're playing their guts out. Again though, there's no way they have any chance of winning the whole thing.

Today's game is an anomaly. There's too many teams that aren't good in this tournament. You need teams from all over the world, but we're allocating far too many spots to teams that have no chance to even be competitive in most games.

Regardless, this has turned into a great game. Far from what I expected.

On another note, is anyone else watching on ESPN in the USA? My feed thruogh my service provider (FIOS) is constantly glitching. It's driving me nuts.

I'm a French Canadian, so I have a little preference for France. I can't believe Canada got beaten 8 to 1 by Honduras during the qualifications, though.

MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARGENTINA WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLESS THIS MESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:handclap:

Expected a lot more from Argentina today. But a win is a win.

Italy looked pitiful yesterday. Very stale team except for Pirlo. And Chiellini is an adventure on the back end. Keeps on ****ing up.

No way Argentina gets past the quarterfinals. Germany, France, Holland, Chile and Columbia are all playing full throttle football right now, while Argentina can barely beat Iran.

And yet only 2 or 3 of those teams have a lineup on par with Argentina. Anyone who thought Iran was a cakewalk doesn't know soccer. They play basically 10 or 11 men behind the ball. Their defense is very good and that's how they basically know they have to play to give themselves a chance.

Argentina has certainly been underwhelming in this tournament, but so have many teams. In a one game knockout, they can beat anyone.

To say they won't make it past the quarters is extremely short-sighted. On any given day, they can certainly take on the best in the world.

I think we saw a team today that expected to be able to walk the ball in, similar to the way they played last game. You can't do that against Iran. I still think Argentina can win it all.
