I think Boyle walks for more than most expect.

I think they should sign Stralman but they won't, mostly because they'll be shopping for UFAs with the cap money they could have used on him. And yes I expect that to go poorly.

Dan Boyle in for Stralman. not saying its a good idea but it replaces Richards on the PP

B. Boyle gets waaay too much as a UFA . Elsewhwere

Boyle is gunna get paid: battle-tested, good leader, and hungry for a Cup. Gunna be sad to see him go though. One of Sather's best acquisitions during his tenure.

This is an atrocious idea. Dan Boyle will be overpaid based on his name and he is nowhere near as good as Stralman.

Agreed. I'm actually really interested to see how he fares after moving away from the Sharks offensive system.

I'd vote no to Dan Boyle

Nikita Nikitin? I do not watch Columbus often enough to know his deal.

He is one guy who's skill set will be very very hard to replace. Very hard.

Nikita would make a decent No 4. He is big and moves real well for someone his size, would fit well onto a team that plays a fast game like we do. Heavy shot and he hits hard when he hits.

I don't really see how he fits onto this team though, he would do fairly well in Staal's spot (but he isn't as good). Of course, could we move Staal for 1st line center Nikitin could function next to Strålman. But you know, just do the math. BR+Staal coming out and the 1st line center we get for Staal+Nikitin comes in. That first line center coming in would have to be pretty cheap for the math to add up...

Is kadri a candidate for 1st line center?

If not we need to look into either O'Reilly or Pavelski

I'm confused.

Why is Pavelski being mentioned as an option for the Rangers? His new five year contract doesn't even kick in until next year - why is there reason to believe San Jose would trade him here?

Is it just based on the fact that the Rangers could use a guy who scored 41 goals (who couldn't?), or is there something more tangible to the possibility of Pavelski coming here?

The 1c should be Stamkos in 2 years. Until then, play Step, Brass, and JT.

If Staal is moved he should bring in something else of need, other than a 1c.

Personally, I'd try and keep Staal, pair him with Girardi on the 2nd line next year, and trade for Mike Green or Kevin Shattenkirk to pair with McD.

Makes 1 mobile offensive pairing that will be pretty damn good defensively. Makes 1 defensive pairing that will predominantly be used to shut teams down. And makes a 3rd pairing where Klein will be matched up with either Conor Allen or John Moore, a formidable 3rd pairing that can handle lower lines and eat minutes.

That's how I'd approach it. Stralman is great but we lack offense on the blue line. Danny G and Staal were a great shut down pairing in their hay-day. Bring that back together. Get someone offensive minded for McD - Mike Green, Kevin Shattenkirk, someone like that? Mike Green is a FA next year. Washington has a new GM and will likely shed some contracts. Shattenkirk will take the house in 1-2 years. Green is 28. Shattenkirk 25.

Wonder if you can get Green for something like Kristo and something.

We should let poo walk and let fast play... I'd rather have more defensive forward than watever poo is which is poop

Problem is without Poo the Rangers are back to having only one guy who can play in front of the net, Kreider.

Fast has some upside, but he doesn't play the game Pouliot does.

And believe me, I'm not in love with keeping Pou either, but they need someone who can play in front of the net. It's a need now even with Kreider and Pou

On to of that poo will cost, at most, $1m more than someone on a minimum NHL salary in UFA (I think its $825k? Could be $550k). Regardless you're not going to get much better out of the FA pool, you'd be better off letting him grow with Brass aand Zucc

I am not a huge fan of poo, but he fits here.

Based on what reasoning would ROR not perform here?

This.
The guy is playing a position that is not natural to him and he's still a 60-70 point player on a team who's best play is Paul Stastny and Nathan McKinnon...

I like this lots

Based on what reasoning would ROR not perform here?

He will be our first line center here. He is behind Duchene and Stastny on the AVs.

Sorry, but the AVs have so much firepower, if he comes to this squad, he will be one of the main targets for other teams to defend against.

I don't think he'll be terrible. But I think he'll be another guy who cannot live up to expectations heaped upon him.

I'd much rather throw money at Stastny then go after ROR. Personally, I'd just prefer to not go either route.

It was bandied about a while back...but Staal for ROR is a deal I could get down with. And I would actually prefer to just keep the D core together and sign Staal under most scenarios. But O'Reilly would be a perfect add to be a FO winning, matchup eating, defensively responsible center (who can actually create as well) for the Rangers. Paired with Brass and Step anchoring offensive units and I am actually ok with the C depth. Would give another dimension that Grabovski, Kadri would not...and I think the Rangers could use some diversity.

But what about Miller, then? Personally, I don't see them not giving him big time minutes next year.

I know many have soured on him, but he's gonna be a great add to this team. He actually plays similarly to ROR.

Stastny is older. ROR's approach to the game is appreciated by Roy. Stastny will go to the highest bidder. Hope that's not us, although if it is, we should enjoy it for the 3-4 years he's actually productive.

I think the flaw would be looking to him as some savior "1st line 70+ point" guy. I agree the Avs production helps him. But his value would be as a great matchup C who can also make a line tick offensively.

Yea fair, and I don't see ROR being realistically available. If it came to it and you had to shift one to wing that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. FWIW I too still believe in Miller. He progressed a lot in the AHL this year, even if he still has things to work on. He's the type of player who will get better as he gains experience and the game slows down for him.

So how much is Sather going to throw at Stastny? ;)

I don't even mind the player, in fact I think he is somewhat underrated, but more like slightly underrated at 6.6M not at ~8M

I picture him being able to provide to us something similar to Ryan Kessler - minus the bomb point shot.

I think comparing him to ROR wouldn't be the farthest fetch, either.

He has natural offensive talent. He has decent speed. He worked on defense this year. He also added significant grit to his game. They yo-yoed him and a bi-product seems to have been a rather nasty on-ice mean streak.

I know i've been questioned for this, but I think the perfect scenario is taking Richards' spot on that line next year. He develops with a savvy vet who will give him teach him more than any coach can. He is also placed on a line with a guy who will be able to cover for his defensive mistakes. On one side veteran mentorship. On the other side the comfort of knowing that you're with a guy who can cover any defensive lapses more often than not. It'll humble him while also allowing him to play with more confidence. I think it really is the perfect situation, for JT... which is why I don't think that the Rangers will go anywhere near Stastny or trading for another center, this offseason.

IMO, the offseason questions that should be focused on this year by the f.o. shouldn't be holes that for now are fine (like 1c)... but maintaining our 4th line depth and our 2nd line defensive line. I'm taking for granted that Zucc and Brassard will be back next year.

Meaning, figure out a way to keep Boyle and Moore on the 4th line. Figure out a way to keep Staal or Stralman while adding more blue line offense with their partner.
