I'm actually hearing that Thornton to NY is gaining traction, but Sather is refusing to include Hagelin along with Brassard and prospects. Staal not involved.

Take it for what it's worth, but this source had Klein to NY the day before Boomer even mentioned him on the air. He did however, get the Cally/MSL deal wrong as he had heard it wasn't happening right before it did. He's definitely connected, close to Gorton specifically, but it's not much more reliable than Eklund so please don't put too much stock into it. Just wanted to share since we were just discussing him (Thornton) today.

Where have you guys been reading this? I remember about a month ago there were some rumors about JT only wanting to come to NY, but then hearing those were refuted with "won't waive for any team." Then there was that fake "insider"...

Trading for Thornton would be a giant mistake. I am vehemently opposed. If he was on a one-year deal, I'd be all for it. But three more at that $6.75m hit? We get one season of him AND Nash together. And isn't that the point of bringing in Jumbo? No way we could make those cap hits work and re-sign who we need to re-sign.

Need to target a 2C/3C tweener that's under 26 and over 6'1" and plays that way. The biggest thing missing from the Rangers right now is a (read: proven) center who can play minutes and has good size.

Is that asking too much? :sarcasm:

Me too, but in what world can we fit JT under the cap unless Nash is going the other way.

Just ran a capgeek, acquring Thornton's full salary without signing Brassard (obviously in a trade hypothetically) and the Rangers would be at a -797K with Moore signed for his Qualifying offer (Brooks said this is likely) and Mueller as the 13th forward. could we move another 2M? who would it be?.. its possible, but extremely tight.

Klein for a younger RH defenseman on a ELC. That saves 2 million right there.

Or move Klein either in the deal for JT or in a separate deal to recoup the prospects we give up in the JT deal, and then either give Allen/McIlrath/Kostka a chance to earn the spot, or sign one of the remaining free agents: McBain, Belov, Corvo, Komisarek, Klesla, Ryan Whitney, Mottau. Guys like Corvo and Komisarek could be offered tryouts and compete with Allen/McIlrath/Kostka for the spot.

Potential lineup:

(Assuming the trade is Brassard + Klein+ Kristo/Lindberg + Skjei just for an example)

Nash Thornton St. Louis (wow)
Kreider Stepan Zuccarello (successful line last season)
Hagelin Miller Stempniak
Glass Moore Lombardi

McDonagh Girardi
Staal Boyle
Moore Allen/McIlrath/Kostka/UFA

Lundqvist
Talbot

That can definitely work under the cap.

If that was the deal? No way in hell. I get the whole thing about unproven potential and proven scorers, but we're talking about a guy who is 35 years old. Yes, he could have 2 or 3 good seasons left, but we'd be giving up a lot of youth in that deal.

All of this is aside from the fact that you have Nash on the left side.

I really hope people are kidding with putting Klein in trade proposals. It would be five steps backwards subtracting from our defense that is out backbone

In this hypothetical the Sharks could just eat $2M if they are desperate enough to move Thornton for Brassard.

I am very much not in favor of adding another aging, fading veteran like Thornton but if Brassard is the only roster piece going back you have to look into it. Don't see ANY chance of that being realistic though.

Dustin Penner is too slow for this team's type of game. If the rangers wanted him he wouldve been signed already imo. Instead we went and signed guys like Lombardi and Stempniak

Good point, enough to raise doubt.
Maybe instead consider Pajaarvi from Blues.
Role player w/ size + speed

thought a scenario one poster suggested was also sending Klein, and I suppose signing a defenseman for a fair amount less. That kind of gets you there.

Almost every line of this post is wrong.

I don't know where to begin.

You refuse to trade Brady Skjei? He may never play a single NHL game. McIlrath was held out of the Nash deal. How's that working for us? Are we thanking God that we didn't lose that precious gem prospect? Proven > potential, every time. Let's not get hyperbolic and pretend that you think I'm suggesting that Tanner Glass has more value than Jonathon Drouin because he's proven. The point is that a middling prospect like Skjei who is still in college does not hold up any deal for Joe Thornton (probably the second best passer in the world, behind only Crosby)

Thornton is an elite offensive player, even at 34. If you think trading ~5M 45-point Brassard for 6.75M 75-point Thornton in the current "win-now" window of opportunity the Rangers are in is "stupid," then I'm not sure we have the grounds to engage in an intelligent discussion.

You lost me as soon as you typed that Skjei--may never play a single NHL game--which is the same ********* pretty much when we use to hear that Kreider was going to be our next version of Hugh Jessiman. The only things that are going to stop Brady Skjei from playing in the NHL for a long while are death or career ending injury. Kreider without the offense would still become an NHL player--just on size, speed and strength--he would eventually make it as a checker. Skjei has all the size, skating, reach, puck skills and positional play to make him a slam dunk (or easy layup--however you want it) NHL player. He might never run a pwp but his game just oozes top 4 NHL defenseman. At #28 in his draft year he was a shrewd pick and is arguably our best prospect. He won't need as much time in the AHL as McIlrath (and I like Dylan). He's more on a fast track to the NHL like McDonagh.

Would not trade him straight up for Joe Thornton. Back to the drawing board for you and figure out some other combination.

Hope its true, I wouldn't trade Hags in a package. That sort of speed is invaluable and not replaced. Hags is a unique asset.

I am absolutely salivating at the notion of turning Brassard into Thornton.

Bold:agree

Underline: why?
Both are playmakers. Thornton mo height, prob a little bit of power. Brassard better skater, mo speed, grace.

Neither is a serious finisher.
And the kicker is Thornton contract.

No. Stay away!!
Better options to flip Brassmeister if he is on the way out....
