Dustin Penner is too slow for this team's type of game. If the rangers wanted him he wouldve been signed already imo. Instead we went and signed guys like Lombardi and Stempniak

It seems to me looking at cap geek that Sather and some of the other GM's may be trying to do shorter deals to keep open cap space for the great 2016 UFA class including Stamkos, Kopitar, E Staal, R OReilly, Lucic, Yandle, Kesler, Byfuglin, Seabrook.

Am I giving slats too much credit or are deals becoming shorter on the norm?

Do you actually think these players will make it to FA? lirl. Maybe 1-2 on that list makes it to FA such as Buff and Kesler.

This.

He'd make Stepan look like Hagelin.

We have less than one million to add one roster player
Ideally he is big, has grit, scores, play defensively responsible, can skate, is young and can develop...
But we live in a real world world here. A salary cap NHL
Kevin Hayes might be that player
But if Hayes signs elsewhere then Penner would not be the worst alternative left out there
Most likely neither will wind up here though
One of Carcillo or Carter might though

one of the things I think is being overlooked here when construction lines is how good MSL actually is with regards to helping youngsters develope their offensive games.

Stammer was out most of the year and Palat had a great year, Killorn had a great year. Filppula got close to 60 points again, Purcell slid a bit, but Tyler Johnson got 50, Hedman got 50+

I believe that Miller is ready for the 3rd line spot. And because I believe that, I believe that the best course of action is to put him with an offensive player that can help draw out his confidence in that regards.

Kreider - Stepan - Nash
Stempniak - Brassard - Zuccs
Hagelin - Miller - MSL
Who's on first - What's on 2nd - I don't know who's on third.

This is going to do a number of things.

- We help JT's development by putting him with offensive capable players while not being horrible defensively.

- We spread the offence. Hagelin has shown to be a .5 point a game player, 184 games in he has 95 points. Putting those two players with a guy that so desperately needs to believe he is capable himself can only help

- We limit the ES minutes MSL absorbs early in the season keeping him fresher as the season moves along.

We cannot ignore father time looking in on MSL and think that he is going to continue to perform at the same level as he has the last 2 years. Lets be proactive with the number of minutes he gets to ensure that he doesn't tire out in March, April and May.

If the past is any indication, maybe two of those players will hit the market.

Was about to post this. Free agency isn't what it used to be. The good players get 8 year deals before they hit the open market and the mediocre leftovers get overpaid big time out if desperation from other GMs.

But with all this said, I can't imagine the overpayment that Kopitar would get if he somehow actually hit the open market. GMs would no doubt not hesitate to use their masterballs.

That isn't what I am asking. You called Thornton a loser. Based upon your criteria of what it takes to be a loser, Lundqvist would be one as well.

100 points in 132 playoff games. What more do you want from him? Boston winning had nothing to do with cutting their ties to Jumbo Joe. It had to do with Tim Thomas playing out of his mind and Zdeno Chara being the best dman in the league at the time. They were stacked a stacked team as well. You really think if they had Joe Thornton in addition to all of those players they would have lost in the SC finals simply because of the notion that Joe Thornton is a loser? Give me a break. If he is a loser than what does that make Rick Nash?

I dunno.

I had a few conversations with numerous Bruins fans before they traded Big Joe and to a man they all felt the team would be better off if they traded him.

Each one felt that they really could not win with Thornton as the teams defacto leader in terms of their go to guy.

8am one morning after a Bruins game, a game in which Jumbo lost a face off and had his stick knocked from his hands, a bruins fan/co worker of mine was absolutely disgusted with him.

And I quote.

"I wish we could trade this guy today"

6 hours later, he was in San Jose.

My friend? While not stoked about the return, was ecstatic that Thornton was gone.

Alot of fans had no belief that a team, any team could win the cup with this guy.

Does that make him a loser? No. But he's no winner regardless of the points he puts up.

That's a great story, but Joe Thornton is still one of the two best playmakers in the NHL.

Put Thornton on NY (assuming we don't overpay in assets) and we'd have a great chance to contend for The Cup.

He doesn't have some "loser" quality that would PREVENT us from winning. The two teams he's been on just haven't won. He's a great player. You're talking nonsense.

Probably would get more then Kane/Toews, or at the very least, on par.

wonder what they said about Bourque, Oates and Neely? Probably said they could win with them in the lineup, but for Bourque it took him leaving the franchise to win his cup. Yes, they never had the full complement around Bourque to win the Cup. He couldn't be expected to do it on his own now, could he? Same can't be true while Thornton was there. They had everything except for their playmaking centerman playing to the level at which he needed to play in order for them to win. Some players are endearing to their fanbase. Some players are 18 year old, cocky studs with whom they don't win and it's that one person's fault. It wasn't the goalie who couldn't stand on his head. And heck, Thornton was out of there by 24. Give him a chance to play with Cara and Rask and a couple others...maybe they win. But the Bruins fans feel they were right...Thornton moved on and didn't win. At least Bourque was able to move on in win.

I really think we need some size (Winnik, Penner, etc).. I understand they might not be "great fits" becasue of their lack of speed, but don't we need other guys than just speed?.. Kings are a perfect example IMO.

It's not like Thornton pulls a Rick Nash in the playoffs either. If that were the case I could understand the negativity a little more. But the guy maintains close to a point per game during the playoffs as well and he's played in 132 playoff games in his career.

exactly this.

Kings are not a good example for everyone to constantly use to compare their team to.

The Kings are a powerhouse. Everyone on their team except Mike Richards is big. And even though he's only 5'11", he's still 200 pounds.

The Kings are all big, and their big, big guys are fast too.

We're not going to be able to emulate them. We have speed and skill up front, and we have stellar goaltending and defense.

Worry about our team and simply improving it any way you can. Adding size simply to be able to say "we're big too" is a silly move. We don't need to bring in slow, 30-point forwards just to increase our height average on the team.

Penner and Winnik don't take a spot from anyone and make us a better team IMO (maybe Glass but he's an exception because AV specifically asked for him, so we've gotta have some faith in the coach and let the experiment unfold.)
