People seriously overrate Brassard. He's a lot less integral to this team than many think.
I tend to agree (what's going on? You and I agreeing?!)
With that said, I have a feeling Brassard is going to have a big year as our center depth basically forces him to get a lot of minutes, and likely with two of Zuccarello/Nash/Kreider/MSL.
It might actually be smart to sign Brassard for 4 years at 4.5 rather than waiting until after this season (if he gets a 1 year arb award) when he could potentially command 5+ if he puts up 55+ points playing with the aforementioned wingers. Of course, the flip side is that we don't want to be stuck with him long-term in the event that Stamkos or another elite center becomes available when we're already paying Stepan north of 6 million (which will undoubtably be his market value if he continues to put up ~60 points or more).
It's definitely a tough decision to make, just as the Marc Staal decision will be.
All things considered, Id rather trade both Brassard and Staal this season and try to recoup some value (ideally in the form of a Ryan O'Reilly and young ELC defenseman). I'd much rather have Stepan and O'Reilly at 6+ each than Stepan at 6+ and Brassard at ~5 or *gasp* more.
Tough decisions ahead, boys. That's for sure.
ROR + Stepan would be a great 1A and 1B, but it will be very difficult to swing that while paying Kreider, Zuccarello, Hagelin what their worth in the next couple of seasons; not to mention re-signing Marty to one-year-at-a-time deals.
