As the camera follows Adam Erne and the staff of the San Jose Sharks down from the stage and out of sight, a quick cut reveals the scouting brass of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The amateur scouting staff sit motionless with their eyes fixated on their General Manager, awaiting confirmation. There is not a stir or word from a single soul as Nonis, enduring his first stint as head honcho in Toronto at the draft table, stares at several sheets of paper before him. Several moments pass before Nonis falls back to reality and acknowledges his staff. Nothing more than a nod as the General Manager shuffles his papers neatly before him.
Duthie: And with that, next up to the podium, to make the 21st selection of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, we have Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs. How much of a splash can Nonis make with his very first selection as the boss of the Maple Leafs?
McKenzie: Well, it's no secret that one would expect the Leafs to go with a forward here in the 1st round. Defensively, the Toronto Maple Leafs are more than content with the talent they are grooming for the National Hockey League. Unfortunately for the Leafs, they lack the presence of true offensive and dynamic forwards in their organization moving forward. Unless Dave Nonis and his team have their hearts set on a particular defender or a goalkeeper such as Fucale, this selection is likely to be a scoring forward with boom or bust potential.
McGuire: Absolutely, Bob! The Leafs need a big body up front, and you know how much I love those big guys! I'd look for Dave Nonis and his staff to go off the board and take Mike McCarron. This kid is a MONSTER standing in at 6 foot 5, and 229 pounds, Bob! It wouldn't be the first time that this Leafs scouting staff has gone for a player from the American development team early on. And boy, does this kid have a MONSTER of a shot!
Duthie: That would be an interesting selection, Pierre. Now, here with the 21st selection, is Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Nonis: The Toronto Maple Leafs would like to congratulate the Boston Bruins on their Stanley Cup victory, as well as the New Jersey Devils, their fans and their staff here in New Jersey for putting on this momentous occasion. We would also like to say a warm hello to our Season Ticket Holders at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. With that said, our first selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select... from the Regina Pats of the WHL, Morgan Klimchuk!
McGuire: Oh, baby! What a pick for the Toronto Maple Leafs! This is exactly what the Leafs organization needs right now. This kid has a MONSTER of a shot. Natural goal scorer that puts the puck in the net! MONSTER!
McKenzie: With Morgan Klimchuk, the Maple Leafs are getting a forward that differs from their withstanding wing prospects that comprise of primarily of third-line role players. Klimchuk's greatest asset is definitely his shot. He's able to make goalies look foolish with his fantastic release. Not only does Klimchuk have one heck of a shot, but he has explosive skating with decent top speed. Unfortunately, the Pats struggled mightily this past season and Klimchuk showed off his ability to carry a team while being one of the few bright spots on a weak team. Klimchuk has the potential to be a special player for Toronto.
