As the camera follows Adam Erne and the staff of the San Jose Sharks down from the stage and out of sight, a quick cut reveals the scouting brass of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The amateur scouting staff sit motionless with their eyes fixated on their General Manager, awaiting confirmation. There is not a stir or word from a single soul as Nonis, enduring his first stint as head honcho in Toronto at the draft table, stares at several sheets of paper before him. Several moments pass before Nonis falls back to reality and acknowledges his staff. Nothing more than a nod as the General Manager shuffles his papers neatly before him.

Duthie: And with that, next up to the podium, to make the 21st selection of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, we have Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs. How much of a splash can Nonis make with his very first selection as the boss of the Maple Leafs?

McKenzie: Well, it's no secret that one would expect the Leafs to go with a forward here in the 1st round. Defensively, the Toronto Maple Leafs are more than content with the talent they are grooming for the National Hockey League. Unfortunately for the Leafs, they lack the presence of true offensive and dynamic forwards in their organization moving forward. Unless Dave Nonis and his team have their hearts set on a particular defender or a goalkeeper such as Fucale, this selection is likely to be a scoring forward with boom or bust potential.

McGuire: Absolutely, Bob! The Leafs need a big body up front, and you know how much I love those big guys! I'd look for Dave Nonis and his staff to go off the board and take Mike McCarron. This kid is a MONSTER standing in at 6 foot 5, and 229 pounds, Bob! It wouldn't be the first time that this Leafs scouting staff has gone for a player from the American development team early on. And boy, does this kid have a MONSTER of a shot!

Duthie: That would be an interesting selection, Pierre. Now, here with the 21st selection, is Dave Nonis and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

bobmckenzie_3173-430x298.jpg

Nonis: The Toronto Maple Leafs would like to congratulate the Boston Bruins on their Stanley Cup victory, as well as the New Jersey Devils, their fans and their staff here in New Jersey for putting on this momentous occasion. We would also like to say a warm hello to our Season Ticket Holders at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. With that said, our first selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs are proud to select... from the Regina Pats of the WHL, Morgan Klimchuk!

Morgan-Klimchuk.jpg

McGuire: Oh, baby! What a pick for the Toronto Maple Leafs! This is exactly what the Leafs organization needs right now. This kid has a MONSTER of a shot. Natural goal scorer that puts the puck in the net! MONSTER!

McKenzie: With Morgan Klimchuk, the Maple Leafs are getting a forward that differs from their withstanding wing prospects that comprise of primarily of third-line role players. Klimchuk's greatest asset is definitely his shot. He's able to make goalies look foolish with his fantastic release. Not only does Klimchuk have one heck of a shot, but he has explosive skating with decent top speed. Unfortunately, the Pats struggled mightily this past season and Klimchuk showed off his ability to carry a team while being one of the few bright spots on a weak team. Klimchuk has the potential to be a special player for Toronto.

:flames select Ryan Pulock

"Ryan will be the best player to be selected in the 2013 draft"- Jay Feaster

_

6'0 210lbs elite offensive defenseman. Methodical breakout and wicked slap shot(over 100mph). Pulock can run a powerplay with his vision and point shot. Great offensive IQ. Pulock is average defensively but he has shown he can be great defensively. He needs to improve his decision making to avoid defensive breakdowns. Pulock's skating is average, he has good acceleration and agility but lacks a fast top end speed.

:caps The Washington Capitals are proud to select...

From the Guelph Storm, Jason Dickinson

Jason-Dickinson-Aaron-Bell.jpg

Dickinson is a big forward that possesses a lot of potential. He is a very good skater for his size, showing good acceleration and mobility. He’s strong at using his frame to shield the puck away from defenders. He has a very heavy shot, and a very quick release. Dickinson creates chances by being aggressive and driving to the net. He’s still very raw in terms of hockey sense, and at times struggles to make decisions quickly. Dickinson doesn’t shy away from physical contact, and is very effective on the forecheck and in the cycle.

:nucks With the 24th selection of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the Vancouver Canucks are thrilled to select, from the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL, defenceman Joshua Morrissey.

josh_morrissey_prince_albert_raiders_011613.jpg

We are very happy that a young man of Josh's ability and potential fell to us at this position. We believe Joshua has the ability to be a top pairing defensive a few years down the road. The key to Morrissey’s games is his outstanding skating ability. His stride is fluid, and he has excellent top speed both backwards and forward. His first step is quick, and he accelerates quickly helping him to reach that top speed in just a few steps. He combines very good stickhandling with his great skating to carry the puck through the neutral zone and lead the rush at times for Prince Albert. If not leading the rush, he can effectively join the play as a trailer, and has good instincts for jumping up on the rush. His hockey sense is top notch, and he almost always makes the right decision in the offensive zone. Morrissey has all the tools to be a high level offensive contributor from the blue line.

In his own zone, Morrissey just keeps improving. He plays an effective positional game, always keeping the opponent in front of him, and doing a good job to take away time and space. He doesn’t run around looking for hits, but has shown that when the opportunity presents itself he can be extremely physical, and throw a big check.

We are excited to monitor and aid in the progress of this fine young man and we cannot wait until he joins us up here in the big leagues.

:habs are proud to select with the 25th overall selection, RW Anthony Mantha from Val d'Or in the QMJHL

image.jpg

Bob McKenzie: Mantha was one of the real wildcards in the first round. Some scouts I talked to had him very high on their lists, others had him ranked outside the first. Mantha is very much a boom-or-bust prospect. He has come under attack for his lack of competitiveness at times, which has turned him off to many, but his talent is undeniable. If he fixes parts of his game, he could be a player who we could look back and wonder how he fell this far.

Pierre MacGuire: Bob, I really like this pick for the Montreal Canadiens. Mantha is a top level offensive player that can take over a game, and it really fills a need on the Habs roster. Their lack of a big bodied goal scorer was very apparent in the playoffs, where they were thoroughly dominated by the much bigger and stronger Ottawa Senators. Mantha's big body presence will be a much appreciated addition to the roster; truly a MONSTER in the making.

GM Marc Bergevin: Mantha is a player we have had our eye on for awhile. He's a player that has been blessed with elite talent, in an enviable 6'3, 200lbs frame. We think at this position in the draft he was very good value. This is a player that has showed raw potential normally unavailable outside of the top 10, and we hope he can become an impact player for us down the road.

Why is LA high-jacking my pick?

:cbj 27th Overall Pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft

"Brent Seabrook-Duncan Keith, Ryan Murray-Mirco Mueller."

CLM_20130129_0444.jpg

Mueller is a smooth skating, mobile defenceman, whose game is based on this ability. His lateral agility is very good, especially given his size. His crossovers, pivots, and edgework are also very solid, giving him the ability to cover a lot of ice defensively, or to walk the line and open up passing and shooting lanes offensively. His first step quickness and acceleration are also very good but he could use some work on his top end speed, as it is merely average.

Mueller has shown good offensive ability this season. He keeps his head up and makes a good first pass most of the time. He also shows solid vision and playmaking skill from the point on the powerplay. Mueller has a hard shot which he keeps low and on net. He has good stickhandling ability and combined with his good skating he is able to both lead the rush and join it as a trailer.

At 6’04″ Mueller has great size. However at just 185 lbs, he has plenty of work to do in filling out his frame. He will need to add a lot of muscle over the next couple years in order to stand up to the rigors of pro hockey. However this is a common problem for many 18 year olds and shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

Defensively Mueller shows good positioning and high hockey IQ. He diagnoses the play well, maintains good gap control, and keeps his man to the outside. He is not afraid to block shots, and he cuts down passing lanes well. He gets involved in board battles and works hard to clear the crease. However he could stand to use his size more effectively and this can come with the added muscle mass I talked about above.

Stylistically Mueller looks a lot like Victor Hedman. However this is a stylistic comparison and not one based on potential. In terms of potential Mueller can be a solid top 4 defenceman who can play big penalty kill minutes and contribute on the 2nd powerplay unit for an NHL team if he reaches his ceiling.
is one of the more complete players in this year’s draft class.

28th Overall Pick

:flames select Nicolas Petan
180_1clm_20130129_0238.jpg

_

Jay-Feaster-Calgary-Flames.jpeg

"Nicolas will be the best player to be selected in the 2013 draft"- Jay Feaster

Petan is one of the most skilled players from the draft. He can beat defenders with his speed, skill, creativeness and heart. Petan has high-end possession skills and passing ability that allows him create to create many scoring chances. He uses his lack of size(5`9 166) to his advantage by being extremely shifty and to quick for defenders to handle. His defensive game needs improvement but its far from a weakness.

If Petan was 3 inches taller he would be a top 10 pick.

Jim Nill returns to the podium, still grinning from his last pick.

Duthie : What do you expect here guys?
Bob : Dallas is certainly looking for offense, and there are a ton of great forwards still available.
Pierre : I hope they pick someone big...

With the final pick of the first round, the Dallas Stars are pleased to select, from rimouski of the QMJHL, C Frederik Gauthier

Gauthier_Rimouski1_325x183.jpg

Pierre : WOW! What an amazing pick. 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, he's a MONSTER!
Bob : I love this pick. Many thought he'd go a lot earlier in the draft. He's an imposing physical specimen who scores at almost a PPG in the Q, but most importantly, he's a defensive stud. I've never seen someone his size come back on defense so quickly and work so hard. I'd compare him to a vinny lecavalier type player, or a much larger sean couturier.

With the 32nd pick the Colorado Avalanche are pleased as punch to select, right winger from the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Marc-Olivier Roy.

Sherman: Kid did everything for the Armada this year. Coach Houle demands a lot from his players and Marc-Olivier did a great job for him at both ends of the ice. Nice hands, good scoring touch and playmaking ability, quick feet, smarts. Non-stop hustle. Plus he's got the same last name as our shiny new coach. We can't miss here.

With the 37th overall pick, the Edmonton Oilers are pleased to select D Robert Hagg from Modo of the SEL.

Robert-Hagg.jpg

Duthie: I like this pick for Edmonton. Now that we've moved away from the first round, they can afford to go for the less sexy picks without having their fanbase crucify them. Hagg is a smooth skater who can provide offense from the back-end without giving up much defensively on a good day. The Oilers hope he'll anchor their powerplay somewhere down the line and provide an offensive onslaught alongside Yakupov, Nugent-Hopkins and company.

with the 39th overall selection the New jersey Devils :devils select LW Pavel Buchnevich from CHEREPOVETS RUSSIA

HF Talent Analysis

A fast skating forward with a good set of hands, Buchnevich is a very interesting prospect with an impressive ceiling. Not so big at 6'0", 170 pounds, the Cherepovets, Russia native makes things happen with his speed and skills. Buchnevich is indeed a player who has the ability to entartain the public with his skating and stickhandling abilities. On the other hand, he has still a lot to do before considering himself ready to cross the Atlantic. First, he needs to add some meat to his frame, then he has to improve his defensive game and play a more cohesive game. Buchnevich is a good playmaker and has very good vision of the ice.

With the 40th overall selection, the :stars take C Lucas Wallmark from Skelleftea AIK of the swedish elite league (on loan to Lulea next year).

78bdb514e8a3771aa999d9fb401a9877.jpeg

Wallmark is the youngest player in the draft, led team Sweden at the U18's and produced at multiple levels (J20, Allsvenkan, SEL) last season. He's 6'0-175 but still growing, and more than handled himself against men. He's great at both ends of the ice. This is a long-term project pick and we expect Lucas to spend the next 2 seasons in Sweden before coming over.

The Philadelphia Flyers are proud to select from Owen Sound of the OHL, Chris Bigras!

The Flyers really love Bigras steady all around two way game and we envision him playing in our top 6 defence in the near future. We expect that he will take a giant leap forwards next season offensively.

McGuire: Scouts I talked to loved this kid as a late 1st round selection Bob. They see him in a similar mold to Matt Finn last year. Solid two way guy with some upside. One GM even told me he had him rated in the top 15!
McKenzie: Solid pick for the Flyers who have some holes to fill in the future with Timonen coming to the end of his career.

With the 42nd overall pick, the Phoenix Coyotes are proud to select Artturi Lehkonen!

Lehkonen may not be overly big in size, but he skates well. He definitely shows his offensive instincts as he has some sound stick handling, passing, and innate scoring abilities as he likes to shoot.
