Gainey had time to do 2 5-year plan before people start questioning him. If anything, the only thing I'm willing to do is give Bergevin at least 3 full years before starting to discuss his work as a whole. We can totally agree or disagree with every single moves he makes. No problem with that. But going as far as already replace him, to compare him to the worst GM's or already say that he's terrible because he didn't acquire UFA's while the summer isn't over is way too exagerrated.

I'm operating on a continuous basis. My opinion on Bergy has been changing and evolving as time goes on and will continue to do so - at this moment in time everything he does, even his mannerisms, reminds me of the Gainey-era so much that I can't help to feel urged to point it out over and over to anybody who'd listen.

I can't "give him time" because I never really clamor to get anybody fired because I understand I have ~zero~ affect on hiring and firings. My opinion,as of today, is that Bergevin is operating much like Gainey did - on the assumption that his core and his team identity is fine and only needs minor tweaks. While I see the team as a major work-in-progress that needs talent and size supplemented in at every opportunity. Of course I don't want a firesale but being complacent with Gionta as #1 RW or Desharnais as #2 C bothers me. Bouillon on the PP. Drewiske getting even a whiff of playing time. It upsets me because we're owed better than that.

Another thing that bothers me is how people are so quick to a) put down other teams' signings and b) claim that signing a half-broken 35 year old Briere is some sort of coup. First of all, we're always the fat-girl who didn't get picked for Prom and then we claim "oh well I didn't want player X or player Y at that contract anyway! look how silly they look with that contract! omg!" for the past DECADE. You know what? Good teams find ways around that, they take risks and some work and some don't but they find ways to ice competitive teams anyway.

Briere is going to play pretty well for us, and maybe he'll jump-start our very stagnant powerplay.. but that really does imply that Desharnais needs to gets out. But it also implies that Eller and Galchy will spend another year toiling with minimal PP time. Anyway, it's not he Briere signing itself, it's what it represents: patchwork, aimless, 2nd-rate moves.

The worst move he made was extending Bouillon if you ask me - implying that he's definitely going to play a 39 year old undersized, under talented d-man in an already soft top6. Instead of being proactive and picking up better d-men, he doubled down with Drewiskie and Bouillon and that's nigh-unforgivable.

Aren't we trying to be an up tempo team? It was very clear in the playoffs that Jagr is done. Plus where does he fit? Gallagher, Gionta, Briere on the RW.

He's a PMD offensive defenseman, not exactly what we need even though he is bigger than average.

Seems to me he's a well rounded dman who plays on the 2nd PP unit (which the Habs need). I agree that there's not much point in paying a premium for a top PP blue liner, but I don't think Franson is that.

How many of these will be issues next season? Look at the contracts he's handing out and what he had to work with. Next summer Gionta, Bouillon, Drewiske are gone, with Bouillon and Drewiske being replaced theoretically by Tinordi/Beaulieu and that's without knowing what kind of trades or UFAs can be acquired between then and now. He's wisely not locking up players to long term, and waiting to see where the players he feels will be core in 2 years can take him, while signing serviceable stopgaps to get there. Look at the past 2 UFA seasons, not much more could have been realistically done to truly better the team.

Jagr actually skated very well in the playoffs, he just couldn't score, rang about 10 off posts/cross bar

Jagr is a puck hog who has troub;e scoring at this point. I'd be pretty meh if we signed him.

I'm hoping for a trade.

Was talked about some yesterday in previous threads here & on the Trade boards...we've traded with the Leafs before, so I'd imagine Nonis would at least be willing to listen...think Diaz + 2nd rounder/3rd rounder might do it...;)

Would the Leafs want Diaz, with Phaneuf, Liles, Gardiner and maybe Reilly on the team? Seems to me like they have enough offensive dmen.

Jagr in talks with #Habs. Agent spoke to M Bergevin yesterday. Expects to resume talks soon. 'He's always wanted to play in MTL' #Habs #NHL

I might puke.

Goal-less in the playoffs. How do you think he will play in an 82 game campaign? When he had to miss a period in game 6 because he got a stick in the nose I freaking laughed so hard. Meanwhile Toews and Bergeron are half dead.....

DO NOT WANT. Waste of money and a roster spot.

Really? He looked like he lagged behind very badly. He was always one to slow down the play and make an unreal pass, but that reminds me too much of Gomez: you have a system, but all of a sudden the system changes because of a certain player on the ice.

If they get Jagr then a centreman has to go because Briere would have to move away from RW. I don't think acquiring Jagr and getting rid of Gionta would be a popular move in the dressing room, so that option is out.

Yeah Jagr is pretty slow these days.

I would take Jagr....and THEN we can stop the Plekanec to be traded topics....at least for 1 year....;)

Jagr would click well with him on the 2nd line. His puck distribution skills suits the Habs a lot better than it did the Bruins. Plus he's ridiculously hard to knock off the puck, something we've lacked since Cole left.

Didn't Jagr sign already? I'm sure he's going to sign with Pittsburgh. The Pens and Bruins appear to enjoy swapping these aging superstars.

There is no room for him in the lineup though. We would have to be trading roster players for picks/prospects to add more UFAs.

I don't think he was not bad in the playoffs. Yes, he didn't score but wasn't invisible either. He's still extremely strong on the puck. I still want to see him next to Plekanec.

I would take Jagr in a heartbeat.

It's pretty obvious that one of Desharnais/Gionta is gone, hopefully the former.

Pacioretty-Briere-Gallagher
Jagr-Plekanec-Gionta
Galchenyuk-Eller-Bourque
Moen/Prust-White-Parros/Dumont

Markov-Subban
Emelin-Gorges
Tinordi-Diaz
Bouillon
Drewiske

DO WANT

If that means getting rid of one our smallish forward and then have Jagr + assets (picks) we'd get from the trade, why not?

Or maybe Gionta's injury will make him miss a good chunk of the season and we need someone to replace him.

If we get Jagr it'd likely mean Briere is playing centre which hopefully means Desharnais can GTFO.

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gallagher
Galchenyuk - Eller - Gionta
Bourque - Briere - Jagr
Prust - White - Moen/Parros

Looks not bad to me... I still think Jagr would be fine as a third liner/PP specialist, wouldn't expect top 6 minutes from him though.
