I'm not a huge Ullstrom fan but to look solely at his PPG in the AHL misses the entire point. By that logic Cizikas has no business in the NHL at all.

Or he just a stop gap until Kabanov scores a career best THREE three goals in the AHL?

Lee won't make he nhl unless his skating drastically improves. He was a pylon lat year. Really heavy feet, lots of gliding. It was hard o even guess what he could potentially do because he was rarel in the play. I didn't think he looked very good in the scrimmage this yr either.

I thought ullstrom showed much more. I never though he got a fair shake here last year. Surely he was more effective then JJ.

Ryan Smyth, Nik Antropov, Guillaume Latendresse, Jordan Cheechoo, Milan Lucic are all guys that are plodders who are not very good skaters at all and basically straight line or nothing. There are many others currently in the NHL with similar skating abilities (or lack thereof). If you're strong enough on the puck in the dirty areas and have hands to match, it doesn't really matter much. Yes you will get out of position more defensively, but good positioning and High IQ can mask that (Matt Martin has come along way hasn't he?).

Not worried about Lee at all.

I don't agree. Skating does matter. You can't keep up, you can't play, no matter how good your IQ is. It's not very often you see a guy whose the worst skater on the ice, be an effective player. There really isn't to many Ryan Smyths out there...

Obviously, he can improve his skating, most guys do when they jump levels, but he has a ways to go. I hope you are right, we could use a big body, but I don't see him contributing a whole bunch unless his skating gets better. He was noticeably out of place last year. He was pretty pedestrian in that scrimmage game which was a much slower game then even the AHL.

Again, I hope you are right. JMO.

Of course skating matters, you'll never see me type differently. Especially an up-tempo team like the Islanders. BUT depending on your other strengths, you can still be a useful NHL player for good/great NHL teams even if they are high tempo teams. For example Milan Lucic, Jaromir Jagr, Bryan Bickell and Michal Handzus are 4 of the worst skaters in the NHL today. All of those players (to varying degrees) played key roles in getting their teams to the Stanley cup and in the case of Bickell and Handzus, WINNING the Stanley cup for a quick strike counter punching team like the Hawks (very similar style to the NY Islanders).

Bickell and Handzus were immovable objects in front of Rask and gave the Bruins fits. They also were fantastic in the corners. Their physical play also opened up more room for the skill forwards. You need a few of these players in your line-up even if your a smaller skill type line-up, no ESPECIALLY if your that type of line-up. Can Lee excel in the NHL in front of the net, along the boards and in the corners? I think he can, as can Martin (though Lee does have more skill, as I think Lee's hands will surprise a lot of people).

Just my opinion, and again I am not factoring in the 15 minutes he played in the NHL less than a week of NHL Practice and without the benefit of a single NHL training camp. I also NEVER put any stock into summer scrimmage. They are sometimes fun to watch, but if you're trying to use that as a way to analyze players NHL futures, I'll just suggest you use a dart board.

Give me a break, Justin Papineau was never half the player David Ullstrom is.

As I interpreted that post, you were saying that Ullstrom deserved to be ranked higher because he scored at a .7 PPG clip in the AHL. My comparison to Papineau is that you had a better scorer in the AHL who was complete dogsh*t in the NHL so the fact that Ullstrom scored at a .7 PPG clip in the AHL does not make him deserving of a spot so far

Ullstrom goes to the dirty areas, doesn't shy away from contact.... and as bad as you say he is defensively, he's a selke candidate compared to Papineau. Ullstrom can play anywhere in the bottom 9, literally. Papineau could only play center, and because of his deficiencies, could only do so in a scoring role.... and even though he produced offensively better than Ullstrom, it wasn't good enough to play ina scoring role in the NHL.... even when the Islanders were abysmal.

So, while you're right in the sense that I should have expanded on my reasoning..... comparing him to Papineau to prove a point is ridiculous.

I misunderstood your post. I thought you meant that Ullstrom shouldn't even be on the Isles prospect list at all since he was scoring so poorly in the AHL.

Great video, love that Pedan kid. Way more talented than people thought. Reminds me of a mean Malakhov. Though Malakhov was a good fighter when he did fight. Pedan has a wicked one timer, and some slick hands, and he's mean. Just what we need. It's gonna be fun watching Pedan, Mayfield and Dalhuisen crushing guys next year up at Bridgeport. Fair warning to AHL forwards, keep your heads up while skating with the puck.
