2012-2013 mvp

Dats had dead weight on his line all year in Abby and cleary. Still leads the team.

I voted for Howard because Holland is the best GM currently and of all time. Datsyuk even admitted it was Abby carrying the piano (line) all year. Zetterberg is from Sweden so no way he can be good.

Really I just want to see the captain have an aneurism when Howard wins the poll. To me all three are the reason were in the playoffs. They all stepped up when we needed them.

Nobody said anything about being "legal"

I think that a lot of the fans voting for Howard are the Ken Holland "worshipppers" still all hot and bothered from justifying his contract.

Howie stole a couple games for us. But Howard isn't some Bobrovsky type.
But whatever.

Is Anti Niemi the Sharks MVP?
Is James Reimer the Leafs MVP?
Is Cory Schneider the Canucks MVP?
Is Craig Anderson the Senators' MVP?
Is Corey Crawford the Blackhawks MVP?
Is Tuuka Rask the Bruins MVP?

Actually, as pointed out to you, Niemi is the Sharks MVP.

I'm not a Holland "worshippper" trying to justify his contract, Bobby. By the same token, if there's a poll on here and Datsyuk doesn't win, you "Datsyuk worshipppers" get all hot and bothered, like here.

Datsyuk had as good a season as Toews, whom some are arguing as a Hart candidate. And peole here are voting for Howard as team MVP. Pretty funny stuff.

Datsyuk AINEC. An absolute marvel of a player. In fact, I was hoping to see him nominated for Hart, but with Crosby, Ovie, and possibly Bobrovsky, that list is full. Without Dats, this team is toast, as we are likely to observe against Anaheim. Howard played well down the stretch, but there are several goalies that can do what he did.

And he was the best and most valuable player on the team by a country mile-- for the entire season.

Well, like I said, I don't think you can pick poorly here. I can see the argument for Datsyuk quite easily and I'm not in any particularly disagreement. Ask me tomorrow and maybe I'll vote for him.

But I'm forced to pick one, so I went with the one that I feel played huge most often. That's about it. This is also the first year I'd even lump Howard into MVP consideration, so maybe I'm just enjoying his rise. ;)

It's sort of a backhanded compliment when people say BS like "Pavel is the most entertaining player ... I'll give him that."

It's really not. These assumptions get out of hand. With Lidstrom's retirement, Datsyuk is my favorite player on the team.

So sure, I'm backhandedly complimenting my favorite player. The very guy I picked for my playoff avatar this year.

I guess he can't see that.

You completely contradict yourself from one sentence to the next.;)

I stopped having anneurisms over other people's votes after Bush was re-elected in 04.

If there's a player worthy of worship on the Red Wings, it's Datsyuk.

Has the kind of dazzling skills that every kid on skates is trying emulate.
Backs it up with doggged work along the boards and in the neutral zone and defensive zone. Sacrifices offense for defense. Serious student of the game.

removing datsyuk, zetterberg or howard would mean missing the playoffs. i think it's between datsyuk and howard, but i think howard is easier to replace than datsyuk.

i think it is reasonably feasible to trade for an adequate goalie, but i think it's much less likely to get a replacement for datsyuk. his ability to drive possession is very very important.

zetterberg would be the focus of every team, would have a bigger defensive role. filppula had a poor season. DRW would be on defense more and have more defensive zone faceoffs.

Craig Andersson. Anti Niemi. Brian Elliot. Mike Smith.
The league is full of average to good goalies who look even better when a team tightens up, defensively.

The poi

This is not to say that Howard didn't have a very good year. But we needed to change our style and simplify our game. Howard didn't look very good early on.

Our team wasn't any worse when Howie was letting in goals.

Our team isn't any better because Howie started making saves.

Because the flipside to that is that our offense went in the tank.

Babcock just got uncomfortable with the run-and-gun hockey and shut it down

More passes up the boards to Abdelkader and Cleary. Less passes up the middle to Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

I also think people slagging Gustavsson are off base.
I don't know if he would have been as good as Howard, but he would have been MUCH better than he was.

Gustavsson hardly played. He had two good starts and two bad starts........

This is a good voting problem to have. Three players who stepped up big when it counted most.

Outside of a few goalies (namely Ottawa, Boston, Chicago), just about every goalie struggled for the first 10-15 games. Lundqvist, Quick and Rinne were all sub .900 for the first quarter of the season. So were a lot of other goalies. Bob wasn't playing all the well either.

I don' know if it was the lock out, being had a lot of players played and BUNCH didn't, but defense around the league straight up sucked. Red Wings were in quite a tight spot. Rookies, and some players who decided to sit out.

Regardles. A headless chicken for defense while the other teams well oiled/warmed up offense, is running circles around you? That didn't do favors for ANY goalie for the first quarter of the season; Howard included. While people like to discredit a goalie because of his defense...the goalie is very much reading off his defense.

But once they got their crap in order..somewhat..Howard was stealing games mid season. Then they got their defense totally down the last quater, and he dominated...without scoring support.

Now all of the sudden They are scoring, playing defense, and he's a brick. Just the way it should be. He should be reading off a decent defense, right? If th defense gives him something to read off of...why should that be a knock against him. If anything, that should be props for recognizing it.

He did have few gaffs. But aall goalies have them...even th greatest of the greats. No one is perfect.

Howard, Z, and D are the clear top 3.. but, I don't understand the 'without Howard we don't sniff the playoffs so it must be him' argument?

No kidding? Let's replace Pavel with Cory Emmerton and see how we do. Datsyuk was the only consistently good player on the roster. Simple as that. Took over tons of games and (along with Z) was a big part of getting our GA down. Production slipped from all our forwards, but we're playing to win games here.

Zetterberg is a close second for the same reasons but he disappeared for a bit after his hot start, strong finish to clinch the 7th seed. Howard was incredible down the stretch. He had some gaffes, but he was completely solid most of the season.

Anybody catch Ken declare Howard the regular season MVP of the Wings last night? ;)

I had a chuckle after the debate here.

I think this was the year Howard took it from Datsyuk for once. Howard was a top 5ish goalie this season (I would say his season was 5th best) and he might be a vezina nominee.

Ok, so replace Zetterberg with Emmerton; Z had a higher PPG than Datsyuk. And guess what; Emmerton played a fairly important role in getting that GA down also.

At the same time... what happens if you replace Howard with Gustavsson? That wouldn't be pretty.

Sorry I just think it's hilarious that Bob is defending Datsyuk on a Wings board. As if just because people like other players as well, that means they think less of Datsyuk. Datsyuk is easily the most well respected recent player after Lidstrom and Stevie. The entire LEAGUE absolutely loves him.

Next why don't you go over to some hardcore Christian forum and try to convince everybody that Jesus Christ was actually a really awesome guy.
