As the 2022 OHL draft has come and gone, I figured it’s time to start conversing about next year’s draft.

Here are a few guys to keep an eye on

You have 2 rejected Exceptiomal Status applicants in Ryan Roobroeck and William Moore.

High end ‘07 that played up a year and was probably the best player on his team when he played in Owen Griffin.

Jake O’Brein is another kid to keep an eye on.

07's Brady Martin (Waterloo) and Owen Griffin (Markham Waxers) also played a year up and did quite well. Martin had 42 PTS in 27 GP and Griffin had 27 PTS in 19 GP.

Worst Case, Ontario
Caden Taylor (JRC) played up a year too. Although most games I saw he didn't get much more than 1 shift a game. Will be interesting to see how he is against his own age group.

That sounds like a pretty horrible situation for a 14/15 year old player. Perhaps a cautionary tale for those who think their kid has to play up a year at all costs.

I believe Ethan Weir with the Jr. Knights was an 07 playing up a year as well (his birthday is wrong on Elite Prospects).
Good one, at one point early in the year there was some speculation he may apply for exceptional status along with Roobroeck but alas, never came to be. Still a fantastic player however.

Does anyone know anything about Hong Yu Wang of the Jr. Canadiens? Put up similar totals to O'Brien, Yannin and Malkhassian. But he is Chinese. Is he eligible for the OHL draft next season or would he have to go through the import draft? Will he represent Canada internationally? Would love some help with this!

Any potential Exception Status next year? Any 2008s play up this year?
In the WHL there is a chance for Noah Kosick to earn ES, but I haven’t heard of anyone out of Ontario yet.

Beckham Edwards lead the WSI U12 in scoring a few years back by a fair margin but I don’t know how he has progressed since then. Only name that even remotely comes to mind for Ontario.

I would definitely agree with that. Playing > sitting on the bench of a good team

Logan Hawery - played up with the 2007 Barrie colts, was there best player every game. He’s a pretty legit 2008. Don’t know where he is playing this year.
No exceptional player to the OHL has come from the OMHA. 4/5 Canadians and all 3/3 forwards coming from the GTHL

JT: Marlies (GTHL)
Ekblad: Sun County (Alliance)
McDavid: Marlies (GTHL)
Day: Compuware (US)
Misa: Sens (GTHL)

Tyler Hopkins of Halton Hurricanes (SCTA) was a legitimate scoring threat at the OHF Championships. Come the end of the round robin, he was 6 points ahead of second place Chase Yanni (JrC).

C Tyler Hopkins, Halton Hurricanes (SCTA)
W Chase Yanni, Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
D Jake O'Brien, Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
C Jimmy Sutherland, Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs (Alliance)
W Simon Wang, Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
W Harry Nansi, Myers Automotive/Nepean Raiders (HEO)
C Brady Martin, Waterloo Wolves (Alliance)
W Ethan Weir, London Jr. Knights (Alliance)
C Ryan Roobreock, London Jr. Knights (Alliance)
D Matt Scheafer, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs (SCTA)
C Owen Griffin, Markham Waxers (ETA)
W William Moore, Mississauga Sens (GTHL)

Needless to say, Toronto JrC are a legit contender.

Zachary Nyman of the Vaughan Kings. 08 player to watch.

A little off topic, but for the kids that played up last year...it's kind of amazing that they missed their Minor Bantam year to due COVID, and then skipped Bantam to go straight to Minor Midget. Their first year with checking was playing a year up in Minor Midget. That's impressive to be honest.

is Roobroeck the clear #1 pick?
As of now but that doesn't mean much. He and to a lesser extent Moore got their growth spur earlier than most. Some kids will get theirs this offseason and work their way into the top 5/10 convo I'm sure

Correct, that was the 2007 1st and 2nd team allstar selections. Here are the 1st and 2nd team allstar selections for the 2008 group. Of note, both were selected by the OHL coaches who volunteered to coach each of the '07 and '08 teams in the tournament
