1929-30 Save Percentages

As part of the Hockey Summary Project, Bob Duff has compiled summaries for the 1929-30 season from the best sources he can find. For about a quarter of these games he was able to find shot percentages. Here's a summary of save percentages from those games where the shot totals were known. Sorry about not knowing how to post tables here....

Name GA MIN shots Save %
Alex Connell 56 1650 878 0.936
Ben Grant 16 260 158 0.899
Bill Beveridge 13 310 250 0.948
Charlie Gardiner 29 620 372 0.922
Clint Benedict 6 95 54 0.889
Dolly Dolson 5 70 53 0.906
Flat Walsh 16 345 221 0.928
George Hainsworth 18 470 284 0.937
Jake Forbes 1 70 37 0.973
Joe Miller 43 630 413 0.896
John Ross Roach 58 1400 816 0.929
Lorne Chabot 30 600 395 0.924
Roy Worters 62 1230 656 0.905
Tiny Thompson 19 440 250 0.924

Fascinating. Surprisingly large variance in S% amongst goalies who saw a comparable amount of rubber.. or whatever they made pucks out of then.

Bill Beveridge put up some very good stats as a 20 year old, faced a ton of shots with the Cougars and had a high save percentage on a bad team in what was his rookie season. He was loaned to Detroit from Ottawa for the season, as the Sens had Connell.

Throughout his career, he was usually on bad teams, the Senators/Eagles ended up folding in 1935, then he went to the Maroons, who of course folded in 1938. Beveridge then came back for a year in 1942-43, on a horrible Rangers team.

I wonder how his career would have gone if he had played for a stable team, for example, if he remained in Detroit. He won the championship with the Providence Reds in 1932, when he was sent there as the Senators didn't ice a team that year. He clearly had some talent, but was stuck on bad teams throughout his career.

A few goalies - namely Connell and Hainsworth did much better than usually credited for.

My conclusion from the goalie project was that John Ross Roach was better than Alec Connell, despite Connell being the all-time GAA valedictorian...he was not particularly highly thought of through most of his career based on the contemporary opinions that I found...

Thanks for posting those stats. Would it be safe to assume that this would be the earliest possible season for which save percentages might be available?

The thing to remember about 1929-30 is that it was the season the NHL decided to briefly allow forward passing across the bluelines, before dropping the idea partway through the season and adopting the modern offside rule. Save percentages would've been lower before the rule change than after, so a goalies numbers could be inflated/deflated if a high majority of their sample came from one of the two formats.

Stu McMurray's done 1927-28 as a part of the Hockey Summary Project work. I have it, but I'm hesitant to post without explicit permission.

Thanks for posting these, flyershistory! Very nice.

Overall he did have respectable long career in NHL. I think there were couple chances where he had better team in front, but he did fail those chances. For example 35-36 Maroons which had won SC in previous season. He herited the starter job from Connell after he retired. Maroons were forced to bring Chabot from Chicago in mid-season and they improved after that.

He did have more staying power than some goalie that crumbled under preasure (Aitkenhead,Miiller and to some extend Normie Smith). IIRC correct in this particular seaon he did get chance in Cougars because Dolson was struggling with the new rule.

overpass posted some numbers from '29 via new york times.

I pulled this info from the NYT while I still had access. I held off putting it here since Lorne Chabot was a real option at the time, but now that he's drafted I'll post it.

The NYT published shots against and save percentages for goaltenders in the 1927-28 season. They did not publish these numbers for the full following season, for whatever reason, but they did publish them at the three-quarter mark of the season.

Here are the stats as published in the New York Times, Mar 8, 1929

Goalie | Games | Shots | Saves | GA | SV% | SA/60
Chabot | 34 | 1357 | 1299 | 58 | 0.957 | 39.9
Hainsworth | 33 | 1132 | 1095 | 37 | 0.967 | 34.3
Roach | 33 | 1313 | 1271 | 42 | 0.968 | 39.8
Dolson | 33 | 1302 | 1257 | 45 | 0.965 | 39.5
Thompson | 33 | 1075 | 1036 | 39 | 0.964 | 32.6
Gardiner | 33 | 1360 | 1301 | 59 | 0.957 | 41.2
Connell | 32 | 1163 | 1112 | 51 | 0.956 | 36.3
Miller | 32 | 1223 | 1173 | 50 | 0.959 | 38.2
Worters | 28 | 1156 | 1126 | 30 | 0.974 | 41.3
Benedict | 28 | 1064 | 1025 | 39 | 0.963 | 38.0
Walsh | 10 | 363 | 355 | 8 | 0.978 | 36.3

This is not from this season (from 1927-1928), but a nice article on how many viewed goalie stats in those days.

Good point - the numbers really should be separated into two sets - before and after the rule change.

1929-30 La Patrie

Picked a random Monday issue of La Patrie,December 2, 1929. They had a unique method for presenting the SOGs:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=FawvAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-DMDAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=1772,2987276

In the Maroons / Senators game report with summary the SOGs are above the the participating teams line-ups. The numbers include the goalie change Walsh coming in for Benedict after the first period.

A bit below they have the SOGS by team against the indivividual goalie, seemingly from the weekend games. Header " Lancers De La Ligue Nationale"

Same is true for Monday, November 25th and December 9,1929 although the wording of the header may vary slightly:

December 9, 1929.

I remember seeing shots counted atleast in 1926-1927 season. Don´t know/remember if it was in every game.

There was discussion in last season of NHA about shot counting, but there was mentioning in some newspaper that they had trouble to even track the scorers. So it was too early for that. Atleast SSHL which kind of was half predecessor of the WCHL (about half of the players came from there + teams indirectly) did this in early 20´s though (or the papers did).

edit.
Ottawa Citizen - Jan 3, 1917
Mistakes have already been discovered in the goal-scoring record of the NHA. And yet the suggestion is made that they keep ? the shots, passes, stops and other features.

The period by period numbers are saves, not shots, so goals + saves equal shots.

Bracketed () numbers are games where the only source paper reported shots rather than saves.

When there's a goalie change the numbers given are minutes, shots, goals against.

Iain Fyffe

Hockey fact-checker
There was discussion in last season of NHA about shot counting, but there was mentioning in some newspaper that they had trouble to even track the scorers. So it was too early for that. Atleast SSHL which kind of was half predecessor of the WCHL (about half of the players came from there + teams indirectly) did this in early 20´s though (or the papers did).
The earliest I've seen is the Manitoba senior league, where shots and saves were reported as early as 1914 IIRC. Sometimes it was sporadic, but sometimes a paper would report the numbers for every game in a season.
