I wouldn't call it a surprise at all. I expect them to make it and next year the only team I expect to be better than them is Carolina. Everybody else is meh.

Pretty much every team they have played this year has been better than them, including one of the Sabre games. The Devils OWNED them.

And of course I forgot to put Kreider back in from the bench on my Fantasy team...fck me.

At best, their future can be assessed, as it stands, to being as bright as PAR for a non bottom NHL team. Again, the path needs to change for their future to be actually bright enough to WIN: they have no long term bonafide number 1 or 2 centers in the short term let along long term, Laf and Krav need to pan out, Kakko needs to actually put up points, they need to figure out what to do with Trouba and Kreider's contracts 3 years from now. There's a lot of unknowns that of course every team has, but it doesn't scream to me like "just give it some time for them to play together". They do not have the pieces in place, not for a while.

We'll revisit this next year.
