So because he's played on bad teams thats his fault? Thats like saying Kessel sucks because he put up meaningless stats on a bunch of crappy Leaf teams. He was a very useful player that was railroaded by an incompetent head coach along with Grabo. The very same coach that ran Lupul out of Anaheim and then once he becomes head coach of the Leafs says he "never knew Lupul was so good." Fact is this team would be much better right now with MacArthur than Clarkson.
If a player can't adapt to his role in a particular system, is that the coach's fault or the player's fault? Instead of quickly assigning blame, you can just as easily say that Mac no longer fit in with the direction the Leafs were going in. That's nobody's fault.
But sure, Randy railroaded Mac because he thought that those scrubs JVR and Lupul were better left wingers for his top 6. He railroaded Grabo because Grabo wasn't playing well enough to unseat Kadri or Bozak in the top 6 and he didn't want to mess up the production of his top 6 just to get one player going offensively. What a horrible coach. He took two players that weren't playing well enough to keep their top 6 role and he gave them new roles which they struggled with.
Lupul came back from a serious back injury and fell down the depth charts in Anaheim which is the only reason why he lobbied to be put on his off wing. What a horrible coach for not taking a playoff bound team and experimenting for the sake of one player. Lupul was no difference to Anaheim's success but Lupul wanted Randy to put him on his off wing just so that he could get more minutes. Hindsight is 20/20 and I guess it's easier to criticize now but at the time, there was nothing wrong with Randy's decision.
Fact is, even if we didn't have Clarkson, Kulemin would have had his spot because Kulemin has shown that he can actually play every forward position well and he's much better defensively. That means Mac would have once again been stuck on the third line with Bolland/Holland in the very role that he disliked when he was here.
