Then why would it be ok to use at school? Cultural beliefs do not end at the front door.
This is just a rhetorical question in case it wasn’t obvious.

I think it was more of a "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" type of situation with the parents. While it was presented as "cultural", I had the impression it was more of "as long as he isn't with us, do whatever you want" type of vibe, but I can't even imagine what it is like to be a parent in that situation.

Like the situation @Danko is in. This sounds absolutely unbearable. From both the individual with the disabilities leading to those conditions and their parents. You deserve a medal every single day.

Yeah this all hits a bit close to home. My son is non verbal, can't communicate with us. He is essentially an infant in terms of what he can do and how he presents but is 8 years old now. We pick up on some things just because we know him. The way he kicks his feet, or grinds his teeth etc. His disorder, mental ability, body tone make it so that a machine like that wouldn't work for us. Another parent with a kid with his disorder mentioned something one time that i always think about....these kids cant even do anything if they have an itch or a scratch and it must be so infuriating to t he m.

First paragraph is why I hate people. Second is why I love some people. Great post.

Saw the trailer for this a few weeks back and started to cry, but haven't been in the mindset yet to sit down and watch it since it came out.

As an educator who worked with technology, this story is all too familiar. We had a student who used an Eye Gaze device to communicate. His various disabilities left him with the inability to control any of his bodily functions, but he could use his eyes. He ended up living until about 22, but mentally he never moved beyond the toddler stage. He was able to learn how to use the Eye Gaze device to communicate basic needs and wants and he would have been a great "greeter" at a place like Walmart.

His parents refused to let him use the Eve Gaze device at home. He would essentially sit/lay there all summer without the ability to communicate. Infuriating.

I really badly want to fight his parents

Why would you ever not want to give your child every opportunity to succeed or at least have the best quality of life possible?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Sure is. Since you were connecting, not sure if you got to ride the underground train or not. Also, it's out in the middle of f***ing nowhere

Hope you made it safely to Eugene. Enjoy the thanksgiving holiday with your brother
Yep. 15 minutes to the underground train and then another 10 minutes to my gate. I thought Phoenix was big.

Let’s get a little emotional boys. First movie to get tears out of me in ages.

Out of my mind, by a brilliant actress Phoebe-Ray Taylor.

Here is the trailer. Just amazing, beautiful story.

Looks promising. One of my closest friends growing up had cerebral palsy. He had all the best toys! But he usually wanted to wrestle. He was as strong as an ox, though, and my little elementary school pencil-thin arms were no match for him.

His family moved away before we got to high school and I never heard from him again. I often drive by his house in our old neighbourhood and wonder where he is at.

I am off to Eugene, Oregon today to visit my brother. The one who has cancer. I am not sure if this will be the last time I see him but I am definitely going to try to make the most of it.
I'm so sorry for your brother's condition, Back. I hope the time you spend with him makes great memories and is filled with joy and peace that cancer can't come close to darkening.
