lol and today NYC told MSG they have 10 more years.. 1 billion in renos for 10 years use lol..

and we thought nassau was bad :P

The City Council on Wednesday approved a special permit that allows Madison Square Garden Co. to operate its namesake arena above Penn Station for only another 10 years instead of in perpetuity as the owners had requested.

The 47-1 vote gives federal, state and local governments a decade to find a new home for the Garden so that the nation's busiest transit hub can be overhauled to ease congestion.
The Alliance for a New Penn Station, made up of civic groups and business leaders, applauded Wednesday's vote. (sounds like the kate murray nimby NYC division)

Not exactly a NIMBY situation, A) those don't really exist in midtown Manhattan, and B) they're trying to right one of the worst wrongs in this country's architectural history. .

What they did to the old Penn Station when they built the Garden in the 60's was a complete and total travesty. That was once a beautiful, world-class piece of architecture and they turned into a dark, confusing, hell hole. Even the Garden itself is an eyesore and completely dated looking from an architecture standpoint. The best part part is, Dolan has known this was coming for over a decade and still chose to dump $1 billion into renovating the building as opposed to just looking for a site for a new Garden.

Think about this for a second...with this news, it is not all that far-fetched (if MSG wins the Coliseum rights), that 10-15 years from now the Rags could be playing on Long Island and we would be playing in one of the boroughs of NYC. How ironic would that be? And if that were to happen, how would it make any sense whatsoever for us to still be called the Islanders, lol. Honestly, in that scenario, the Rags should just go to Brooklyn and we come back to Long Island.

I thought about this as well. It could happen, but most likely won't. MSG has 10 years to find a new location, design it and build it. Should be enough time to do that.

If it did happen, we'd still be geographically on Long Island even in Brooklyn, so it wouldn't change a thing for us. By the way our name makes more sense then Rangers in New York when that was a western law thing (aside from Forest Rangers anyway... but they aren't called the New York Forest Rangers).

If the politics in the city are anything like Nassau County I'm not so sure.

All the city is doing is maintaining leverage. But it's not exactly as if they have no interest in the tax revenue MSG generates.

Basically, this just sets up a future negotiation. Nothing unusual about that.

The City Of New York will not let the revenue that MSG generates leave town. I can see MSG IV being built near the Javits Center. Possibly over the West Side Rail Yard. An extension of the 7 subway line is set to open there in 2 years and it should be possible to build a station in the West Side Yard for LIRR passengers.

DREAMSCENARIO:

Ratner loses the NVMC development, Dolan needs a new home, Dolan sues the city, city reimburses a portion of the MSG cost, Dolan renovates the horse shoe debacle with Ratner's blessing and in return covers the cost of NVMC to some extent and purchases the Barclay's lease from Wang for $1.

Isles move back to LI, NYR has a new home in Brooklyn that isn't a feeble architectural JOKE of a horse's footwear, we have a new Coliseum.

Now read that listening to Bob Marley and smoke away.....it ain't ever happening. NYR will extend their lease in ten years or relocate elsewhere in Manhattan....maybe Javitz.

Where the hell are the Knicks going to play with the Nets already at Barclays?

 Well it's never going to happen but I can imagine a lot of heads exploding for all those fans who hate the Rags yet want to support a Nassau/Suffok team.

Mixed feelings about this because the state has no business telling a successful profit drawing business that it has to leave or else. Not to mention that the penn station construction plan would take decades to get done.

You do understand that this will require the US Govt, NY Govt and NJ govt agencies all to sit down and agree and come to terms. good luck with that!

Now if this does happen - it proves that the Dolans don't have any fans in the Bloomberg administration as well as the next one. This is pay back for the west side stadium.. I am sure there are plenty of other billionaires that bonded together to screw the Dolans with this one.

:amazed:

It's completely stunning, where the interdependence of an absolutely vital government coordinated service (transit) and private entertainment is COMPLETELY obvious, that someone could voice such a utterly simplistic point of view. Wow. That's really something.

BTW, how did MSG get that site? Maybe from some nefarious public-private dealing. CORRUPTION! :sarcasm:

Councilman Leroy Comrie, also from Queens, said the new permit would help the city maintain some control over the Garden.

"We want to make sure that if there's a change in ownership that that ownership will continue to be cooperative with the city," he said.

It's about leverage and not completely ceding control over VITAL city services. Not some friggin' Communist Politburo power play. Crikey. /rant

Private entertainment that brings in massive amount of tax money into the city. Like them or not the Garden is a huge draw for the city of NY. Take away the garden and good luck finding replacement revenue. So yes they will fight and have a solid case and probably will win in court in the end.

it won't happen!! It's taking 60yrs to build the 2nd avenue subway and still far from completion. You think we will see the new penn station built in our life times??

Another Dreamscenario:

Islander fans flood MSG for the next 10 yrs. chanting - Kansas City Rags or Seattle Rags or Quebec Rags...

Won't ever transpire...but would love to see those schmucks sweat a little.

And the train station brings in the people to spend lots of money. Hence, interdependence. Duh.

Sorta. But who is MSG? Who will they be in perpetuity. Because, you know, you'd like to know that sort of thing if this is like, forever.

So yes they will fight and have a solid case and probably will win in court in the end.

Errr... Nope.

Yes, I do. New York City went through a period of 20-30 years with little vision or change. That time period is over. The city will change more in the next 10 years than it did in the previous 25.

Look my name isnt Dolan, I don't care what happens but no way as a private owner in which my facility brings countless amounts of revenue and at the same time I spend 1 billion dollars of my own money to renovate as well as the billions spent on the 2 teams budgets over the years will go quietly without a fight.

As the editorial mentioned, good luck bringing those elements together first before we start bringing in the bulldozers

You miss the point. His facility exists at the pleasure of the city. He took the renovation risk knowing that his operating permit was up for renewal. This is not a situation where a government is abusing a poor business owner.

The idea of bulldozers is laughable, of course. But so is the idea that NYC and Jim Dolan couldn't possibly figure something out that, at some point, would make more money for EVERYONE. This is New York Friggin' City.

So is the idea that MSG/Dolan would do a renovation on a retail facilty that, all things considered (i.e. tax writeoffs) wouldn't pay for itself in 10 years. The idea is laughable.

Trust me, I'm not trying to type something to get this closed.

BUT...
My dream scenario:
The home of the Rangers is in doubt and we get to chant, "Kansas City Rangers"
