Kucherov. Not even a question.

Marner is 2nd IMO despite Panarin having the better stats.
If Panarin has better stats, with significantly worse linemates, how is Marner above him as a playmaker? Marner with Ryan Strome and Fast/Blackwell isn’t putting up the numbers Panarin is. Don’t get me wrong he’s an elite playmaker but Panarin is more proven in the playoffs and doesn’t get to play with one of Matthews/Tavares at 5v5

At 5v5 over the last three years nobody has more primary assists than Marner in the league.

Again, look who he plays with compared to Panarin. Can you imagine if Panarin played with one of Matthews/Tavares at all times over Ryan Strome?

Hyman and Tavares versus Atkinson and Strome? Not sure I see a huge difference..

Artemi Panarin - Teammates - On Ice - Natural Stat Trick

Mitchell Marner - Teammates - On Ice - Natural Stat Trick

Funny how nobody ever tried to tear Backstrom’s game apart when he was setting up Ovi.
You don’t see a huge difference between Tavares and Strome? Why is Atkinson relevant he played with Panarin in a defensive system 3 years ago. I’m talking about the last two years where Panarin played with Jesper Fast and Colin Blackwell but you’re using Atkinson to make Panarin’s linemates look better when his best years came with Fast/Blackwell. And you’ve never seen anyone tear apart Backstrom’s game because he plays with Ovi? What?? Are you new to hockey?

Backstrom's entire NHL career has always been torn apart because of just that. Probably one of the most questioned players in the NHL and a huge reason as to why he's always been extremely underrated.

I don't recall anyone doubting Backstrom's supreme playmaking abilities. His role as a HHOF yes, but not in terms of being one of the best playmakers of the era.

Marner has a solid case here based on the premise even though he is the worst overall player. Playmaking is really the only thing he is elite at as evidenced by him racking up assists while putting up very meager goal totals.

Kucherov also racks up some big assist totals but I can’t help but feel they’re inflated some playing in the strongest/deepest forward group in the entire NHL

What does Tampa having good depth have to do with Kucherovs assist totals? What matters is who they actually play with. Marner is attached to Matthews which is going to inflate assist totals way more than Tampa having a deep forward group.

Because no matter who Kucherov is out there with, they are high end forwards. Any combination of Stamkos, Point, Palat, Killorn, Cirelli along with excellent puck moving dmen like Hedman/Sergachev creates an ideal scenario to put up massive point totals.

Almost any other team in the league the overall quality of teammates would fall

It still matters who you’re passing to the most, the majority of the time.

Palat, Killorn and Cirelli are nice players but nothing special. Stamkos is a shell of himself. We saw Points totals plummet when Kucherov missed the regular season. But regardless, none of those players are in the conversation for best goal scorer in the league. For a playmaker, it doesn't get more ideal than being attached to Matthews.

Over the last two years their most common linemates are

Marner
Matthews 1279 minutse
Hyman 812 minutes

Panarin
Strome 1183 minutes
Fast 532 minutes

Can you spot the difference now? Need a little more help? Because it's bleepingly obvious to everyone else.

Panarin has the higher primary assist rate in that span as well. There's no argument for Marner over Panarin.

but...but...the polls said Stamkos is better than Matthews.

Marner was playing hurt in 19-20.
