The Rangers will fire the coach before giving up on this group anytime soon. Probably multiple coaches. This is the core. They have to be better but they need a real coach zero doubt in my mind.

We didn't have significant turnover either. I guess adding 2 rookies is rough, but it's not like we turned over half the roster.

I disagree. While Hank was already on the way out, he is a legend and someone everyone in that locker room looks up to.

Staal, Fast, Hank - that's half your leadership group and the face of the franchise in one offseason, and "replaced" by a couple of teenagers and Jack F'in Johnson.

They'll bounce back.

Wouldn't be too sure about this.

If they don't take the RIGHT steps (no, competing for a spot doesn't necessarily mean that they took the right steps) I anticipate that they'll make a change. JG's leash for Quinn may be long, but I can assure you that JD's won't be.
I maintain that unless the wheels come of the bus, he will be back. The kids take steps backward and no progress made, the team is competing for the lottery again, etc.

If you are willing to give the rest of the team a pass then Johnson has to be afforded that too. Im willing to see what he has to offer this team when we get things straightened out, i actually saw some things i liked in his game last night, but the team was so flat everyone outside of Lindgren and Howden stunk including him
The rest of the team has reason to hope for more. Johnson was the only one to meet expectations. When you sign the worst defenseman in the league this is what you get.

A real captain would step up after that game and address the team. Having 4 As Is like saying you have 2 number one goalies. It means you don’t actually have one.

easier to hide when it’s 4 guys instead of one guy knowing he’s got to stand up and say something. Maybe we don’t have that guy. It appears the Rangers don’t think we do. That might be an even bigger issue until a lafreniere is ready to be that guy.

Okay, now seriously. Not "worried" so to speak, its just that, that was particularly disturbing because I noticed many things like you guys did, but ONE major thing in particular.

We still do not win FO's. When you dont win FO's, you dont have possession. Something needs to be done with this. IDC how much talent you have, if you dont win FO's, and you dont have players "taking away the puck", then you dont have possession which leads to little scoring. Not even to mention how it destroys PP opps. and increasing the chances on giving up PPG's in our d zone. This needs to be corrected. If we cant WIN FO's, then PLAN on what to do WHEN we lose them.
What I said sounds simple, but our geniuses (coaching staff) need to figure it out. Hell, hire Messier if that is what it takes.

The disjointed play was somewhat expected, but not to that extent. Keep it simple then. And THAT is on the coaching.

Voted for Kreider (especially his efforts on PK)

Buchy as I saw some nice things, especially his backchecking that saved a goal, that Sam thought the Islander player missed it. Anyone else replay it to make sure you saw what you saw.?

And Howden. Happy to see others voted for him, as I thought he was much more noticeable and was trying to make a difference.

H.M. GAUTHIER and Georgiev who I thought should have been given the start, not only for his success with past Isle games but because HE might have been able to handle "opening night" better than Shesty still being somewhat green in the NHL. Opening night IS a big deal, and Shesty played nervous.

How would people feel if Mike Sullivan were behind our Bench next year?

Because if Quinn gets canned, I think thats the move they make (I don't think Sully survives beyond this season in Pitt either.)

I will say player personnel aside, the biggest this team is going to have to cross this season and beyond is coaching

We’re 3 seasons in and people still don’t know what “system” Quinn is running

If Rooney is down long term I wouldn't be shocked if we sign Boyle.

When Zibanejad isn't out there we might lose every single other faceoff on Saturday

So Just so I understand correctly after that game the media availability was to two rookies and no veterans had to answer any questions?

Putting aside the awful effort from last night, I'm not exactly sure what people were expecting. This is a young team, theoretically learning a NEW defensive system(Martin) with 1 week of practice going up against a veteran team with an established system. The Rangers have 1 legitimate LD and 4 actual NHL defenseman. While I love Miller's potential he clearly was either overwhelmed by the moment or simply not ready. That's on management and coaching to figure out and they need to do what is best for Miller in the long term. Further, while Trouba needs to be much better, pairing him with Miller certainly is not doing his game any favors. I think it is incredibly hard for him to play his type of game when he needs to worry about giving Miller extra support. I'm a big fan of putting your players in the best possible situation to succeed and I don't think the Rangers have done that with their defenseman. They need to either acquire a stopgap LD to play with Trouba, put him back with Smith, or experiment with Tony at LD. Otherwise, I think we are all just going to have to live with a lot of mistakes and subpar play from this defense while they develop and learn a new system.

For a guy that’s here to develop young players who exactly is Quinn developing. Kakko looks totally lost and getting 8 to 10 minutes a night and switching lines at the drop of a hat not helping. His lack of improvement IMO will be the mail in Quinn’s coffin.

What's the coach for? Why doesn't he show leadership?

Let’s be honest here

they sent chytil down and knoblauch helped him more than anything. He looked great when he came up and then Quinn buried him with Howden and a struggling kakko

lindgren Hartford developed

fox came here a finished product

Kakko struggled badly
Howden struggled badly
Andersson terrible player but he left
Kravtsov left didn’t love the messaging from Quinn playing his best away from him
Barron didn’t do what was expected here in camp
Gauthier can’t get any real mins can’t score can’t defend after dominating the A
Lemieux has regressed to trash
Hajek approaching bust status after initially coming into lineup and playing well before injury

none of these kids are getting any real PP time

so Quinn seems to be good at riding his best veteran players and that’s about it. His specialty is supposed to be developing kids
