Also, the blogger boys who are never wrong were crying and foaming at the mouth for Trouba and the guy has been absolutely horrendous since he has been here. Starting to think he's a solid RH shot on the second pair on a very good team and was sheltered on an absolutely stacked WPG team.
Trouba is frustrating because when he’s playing well he’s a very good player but his foot speed is absolutely atrocious and it’s made worse by boneheaded positioning at times. I don’t think he needs to be a burner to be effective but far too many times he gets caught flat footed in the NZ and it leads to a breakaway when good positioning or anticipation would’ve never allowed that to happen. Dan Girardi basically had cement skates but when he was at his best he always was able to overcome his shortcomings by being very smart with his positioning and hockey sense to put himself in the right spot and not get caught flat footed and not allow those preventable breakaways.

I don't think this is true.

Tonights game really came down to a few things...

1. Johnson's early penalty (which honestly, was borderline but F him)
2. Igor giving up 2 stinkers in the 1st. First goal was a lucky bounce, goals 2 and 3 both have to be stopped.
3. Panarin looking like a Fart trophy finalist.
4. The inexplicable waiving off of what would have been a goal to make it 3-1. They were pressing the play and shortly after that goal was waived off with out a reasonable explanation, Lafreniere gets called for a BS penalty (and the Isles get away with a slash on the same play) and they make it 4-0. Now whether or not they're able to come back from down 3-0 I don't know, but there would be less crowing tonight if that goal stood.
Fart trophy finalist:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I don't know how anybody is surprised by this. The Isles are really good at playing ugly, defensive hockey, as seen last season in the playoffs. Then they have a couple of extremely speedy, creative players who'll make you pay for mistakes. They'll be really good this year, unfortunately.

On the other hand you have a relatively young club that hasn't been playing together in forever. It's the first game in what, nine months, for this club. No wonder they'll blunder. And against a club that bases its' hockey around the concept of capitalizing on errors, especially neutral zone turnovers, that's deadly.

Yeah, like, I don't understand why we even needed to challenge that.

I don't wanna make a big deal about it in a 4-0 game but that was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in awhile.

The refs did what they were supposed to do. They are looking to see whether the puck entered the goal. Then it is incumbent on Quinn to challenge.

Quinn sounds like a reasonable person in the post game but why are they always so unprepared? Panarin has been noticeably different since the season halted in March. Maybe it's his training now that he's a star in a big market.

What worries me is the bad habits never go away. Another too many men penalty? Early goals. Cute hockey.

You see a team like the Islanders and a lot of those players don't have the right way in their DNA but they learn.

The danger in keeping Quinn much longer is the Rangers under him are turning into the Florida Panthers: a team full of interesting pieces and constant high draft picks that is stuck in quicksand.

It's one game, but I honestly don't expect much better results on Saturday. The only thing I'm really interested in is if he sticks with Miller-Trouba or does what everyone knows he's going to do and take out Miller for Smith when it should be Johnson.

At this point waive Johnson, taxi squad his ass, and let Bitteto be on the third pair.

Saturday's lineup shuffle will be Miller out, Smith in, Kakko to the 3rd/4th line for Gauthier / Di Giuseppe / Rooney.

Does anyone really want this team to adapt a tight checking system? Not only is it painful to watch, it really doesn't win in this league. I know the Caps won with it, but they also have the best goal scorer that this game has ever seen.

They'd be much better suited with a coach who is going to get the group to dictate the pace out there and really attack in straight lines rather than clog everything up and hope to pounce on mistakes.

Like AV?

Gonna take solace in a number of kids having a good night. Lafreniere, Howden, Gauthier, Fox, and Lindgren all played pretty solid hockey tonight. Miller showed some flashes even if he was largely on the ugly side. Kakko had chances but couldn't finish.

Kreider on the PK seems like it could be a decent idea.

If we still look like this after 10 games, then I'll start to worry.

Disconcerting though that one of the problems last year was that every line Kakko was on had terrible metrics and then last night he was on with a top 5 player in the league and the line still had terrible metrics.

JJ made two incredibly stupid plays directly that led to goals. I still can’t get over the play where his pass hits the linesman and instead of rushing back into his zone, he’s jawing with the official and slowly moving back to his zone only a couple seconds later seeing a big play developing and by that time he’s too far behind the play and the Isles score. That is f***ing inexcusible. Having no talent is one thing but to not focus on your job is inexcusible. The official f***ed up, but you can’t make a thing out of it and lose the play.

I did notice that, JJ gets pass intercepted after it hits ref and he spends half a second complaining before trying to get back on D.

I know he had one good chance in the 2nd period from right between the circles, but what other chances did he have? Just looking at the charts he had 3 shot attempts, the one I talked about then 2 others that had a 3% chance and 1% chance of becoming a goal.

Kakko almost had a tip in/redirect goal too, in the first if I remember.... it skipped off his stick so probably didn’t count as a shot, but he was in the right position.

What was most alarming about last night was the complete lack of puck skills this team showed. No tape to tape passing, no quality shots, no stick handling of note and all of this comes after 10 straight days of practice where they were supposed to be getting ready for the season and working in skills. Huge reveal on the coach and how he allocated this time.

Obvious errors too in terms of lack of forecheck depth, forwards in a straight line across the ice frequently in the offensive zone( very easy to defend) and 5 guys constantly puck watching in the defensive zone. These are the same errors this team has made since Quinn took over.

Can I also just point out how Joe mentioned a quote from Quinn during the game regarding Kreider on the PK. Apparently Quinn actually said “ we will have to allow Kreider to make mistakes while he learns to PK.” WHAT?!?! If that’s the mindset of the coach, and he publicly says that( or words to that affect) how is that even remotely acceptable in terms of locker room moral? Clearly it indicates to the players that the coach is not interested in putting his players in positions to succeed but would rather forgive mistakes once they inevitably make them.

Lastly, the camera angle/work was horrendous last night too. Either they’ve moved the main camera further away from the ice or the person operating it had it zoomed so far out that it was impossible to see player numbers. MSG better fix this because it was borderline unwatchable. Did others notice this too? Been watching hockey my whole 37 years on earth and I’ve never experienced anything this bad in terms of camera work/ positioning.

Do they really though?

Hughes got bullied all of last year and is allergic to scoring goals. Dach got some primo minutes with Kane towards the end of last year.

The hyperbole tonight is ridiculous and his overall analytics based off of this game alone are really not reflective with how he played.

His issues are really 2 fold...

1. He isn't good at getting the puck back when he doesn't have it, this should be a major area of focus for him, this is coachable.
2. His best work comes from the dots inwards.

In a game where Panarin was basically dishing pucks out to the Islanders like he was playing for them, #1 was really exaggerated in the statistics (almost all of his xGA can be attributed to Panarin. I don't think he did anything egregious defensively but I'd have to go back and look at the tape to make sure and I'd rather not) and #2 couldn't come into fruition. In fact, I'd say that the coaching staff has done a really, really poor job putting him in a position to use his strengths and last year, tried to turn him into a player that he wasn't (along with him losing his wind like after 20 games.)

But here is the good news, when Panarin decides that he wants to start playing like a good player again, #2 is something that should become MUCH easier for him to do. I don't know if this is the best line for him, but they should stick with it for a while and see what it looks like when Panarin is Panarin instead of what ever the hell he was tonight.

I just don't get where all the hate is coming from. Its one game where our best player was our worst forward and happened to be on Kakko's line.

This is reassuring.

Anybody understand how the refs missed goalie interference of the goal that was challenged by Quinn?

I was amazed... so they looked at it on video once and saw it was a goal but didn’t see the interference... then Quinn challenged, and they immediately see the interference? Did they forget to be watching for that until he reminded them or something? WTF?

Losing is not what is concerning - it’s looking listless and lifeless, especially from players like Kakko and Chytil who are supposed to be developing into impact players. Would like to see chances and them doing things with the puck on their stick. Instead, invisible. If rushes were being generated and they were just forgetting to get back on D, or were making mistakes that cost us goal chances, whatever, but I see no playmaking or offense from anyone either. It’s getting scary.

This was so blatant that I’m wondering if it’s some stupid rule where they weren’t able to call it in the first review since they didn’t call it immediately on the ice.

That’s the only possible explanation, because they came to that conclusion in literally 5 seconds in the second review.

Who knows - the Rangers got boned all night by the refs, so nothing surprises me at this point. They’ve shown a tendency to be just as terrible at their job as our players.

Kakko and Chytil show very little confidence to make plays or take risks. Probably because they will get scolded & benched for it by Quinn. So they are playing it safe and "trying to do the right thing".

You have to wonder who's the one holding back their development. I mean Kakko started the season great last year and ended up riding the bench after scoring 2 goals in Calgary etc. Coaching sophomores in college is not the same as coaching pros in the NHL...

I understand frustration but honestly the team hasn’t played much these past 9 months. No preseason games either along with inexperience from the kids. It should be better going into the next few games

Last night looked like a continuation of being awful from the 3 games we played in the bubble.

DQ needs to get this ship righted FAST with this shorten season.

Ill scratch this off due to a long lay off, shortened preseason, and some new players. Next game better be a lot cleaner with way less penalties.

Id also rather see Smith than JMFJ. Miller looked nervous handling the puck like a grenade. KK, anyone home?

I think the frustration boils down to this team not looking ready for this game. They had no jump. No energy. They werent buzzing. The sloppiness I can understand, the other things I cannot. And for me that starts with the Coach. It is one game and they will be better, but they weren’t even competitive out there. They looked lifeless. Got beat to every puck. Its one thing if they were playing hard and lost a close game. The Islanders did not even look that great. I don’t think the Islanders did anything spectacular last night, the rangers were just that bad.

They need another veteran presence here that has experience in this league. Rooney is not the answer on the 4th line so he is an easily replaceable player. Sign Brian Boyle. No he will not fix Jack Johnson and the defense but he would be an upgrade to Kevin f***ing Rooney and can be another voice in the room. They are too young and it showed last night.

I'm still excited enough about this team even after that stinker to appear from a different dimension and post here! It's really unfortunate to see the team give up a 2nd round pick just for the privilege of playing JJ 20 minutes a night. I think 3 years of the David Quinn experience is more than enough and it's time to get off that ride.

Other than that, I thought Laf was noticeable, which was up there on the list of good things that could happen this game! Too bad nothing else good did.
