Mackenzie McDonald of the U.S. has become the first man to reach the fourth round on his Wimbledon debut since Nick Kyrgios in 2014. The 103rd-ranked McDonald, 23, defeated Guido Pella 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (6) on Friday.
Pella delivered the biggest upset so far in the men's draw when he eliminated third-seeded Marin Cilic in a match that was carried over to Thursday. He was unable to repeat that performance against McDonald, who is playing in his third Grand Slam.
The American next faces 13th-seeded Milos Raonic or unseeded Austrian Dennis Novak, who is also making his Wimbledon debut. McDonald won the 2016 NCAA singles and doubles titles for UCLA.
